We're enjoying another pleasantly warm evening, with just a few leftover clouds as the sun slips toward the western horizon. Full sunshine and rapid warming early this morning led to a very quick build-up of clouds over the mountains, with thunder occurring as early as about 11:20am. There was more occasional thunder and even a few sprinkles during the afternoon, but I'm not aware of any measurable rainfall. My high temp in the upper part of town was held back a bit by the clouds -- I recorded a high of 82.0F (27.8F).
Well, it's evident that there is still plenty of colder air lingering in the upper atmosphere to resist the advance of warmer air at the surface into the mid-levels. This is what has been allowing the mountain clouds, thunder and light showers to develop by mid-day. The computer models continue to gradually wipe out the instability factor during the next few days as warmer air arrives aloft, but don't be surprised by those rumbles of thunder from the mountains for another day or two. Otherwise there should be a good amount of strong June sunshine to go around.
As this year's monsoon conditions remain hung up well to our south, it's actually looking like we may experience one more pseudo-heatwave across northern India later this week. Although I doubt we'll exceed the near-record hot temps of just over a week ago, we should be well above normal by the latter half of this week.
