june doldrums... (pm.17.jun.12)>

*Update at 7:40pm... widespread cloudiness has redeveloped over the mountains late this evening, and I'm concerned that things are unstable enough to stir up a thundershower or two overnight.

There are still quite a few clouds hanging over the mountains this evening, but the sun is reappearing in the western sky.  Our mostly sunny morning gave way to some clouds, thunder, and even a few very light rain showers (at least in the upper part of town) by about 2:00pm.  Although there was just a trace of rain at my location, those were the first raindrops in nearly a week.  I recorded a high temp of 89.4F (31.9C) -- just slightly cooler than the last couple of days.

The upper-atmospheric pattern is virtually featureless these days... but apparently there are still some isolated pockets of colder air up there, because that's the source of the instability which triggered the light thundershowers over the mountains this afternoon.  Despite that, there are no big changes expected in our weather pattern expected right through the coming week.  That risk of a mainly PM thundershower developing over the mountains can't be ruled out, but it still looks like we're not in much of a position to pick up any significant rainfall.  Computer models continue to hint at a slight increase in humidity toward the latter part of the week -- which we'll have to keep our eyes on.

A fairly large bubble of warm air remains anchored from central Pakistan into northern India, which will keep our temperatures running a few degrees above normal for mid-June (or anytime of the year, for that matter).  As I've mentioned before, it's going to take the arrival of some tropical humidity and/or some significant rainfall to cool us off much...
