At 5:15pm we had cloudy skies and strong winds carrying clouds of dust through town... but now at 6:00pm, it is mostly sunny, calm, and pleasantly warm. There were even a couple of rumbles of thunder along with some very brief, very light showers this afternoon -- but once again -- not enough rain to register a measurement in the rain gauge. Thanks to the clouds and feeble thundershowers, my high temp in the upper part of town reached only 86.5F (30.3C), which is the lowest since last Monday.
Temperatures in the upper-levels of the atmosphere continue to cool off, and that is creating the instability necessary to generate some clouds and isolated thundershowers which in turn transport some of that cooler air down to the surface. This dynamic is eroding most of the heatwave conditions from northern India, and should keep temperatures more tolerable for all of us during this coming week. It's not going to be cool, by any stretch of the imagination, but at least a bit closer to normal for early June.
Although there will be a risk of a thundershower popping up nearly any afternoon this week, I'm still not seeing a very good chance for us to pick up the kind of significant rainfall we need. Our air mass remains relatively dry, and there isn't yet the slightest sign of the first waves of deep tropical moisture associated with the advance of the monsoon season...
