first mega-downpour... (pm.23.june.12)>

Things have calmed down this evening, but we still have mostly cloudy skies at the time of this posting.  It has been an active day, to say the least -- we started off with lots of sunshine until the early afternoon, which boosted our high temp to 85.3F (29.6C).  But clouds developed rapidly  by 2:30pm, with thunder and light showers getting going around 3:00pm.  Between 3:30 and 5:00pm we had thunder, heavy showers, gusty winds, and even some hail thrown into the mix.  I've ended up with 1.35" (3.4cm) in my rain gauge, which is the most I've recorded in a single day since the morning hours of March 5th!

*Update @ 8:12pm... now 1.84" (4.7cm) here in the upper part of town.  Rainfall since 3pm today has now exceeded the amount we've received in the entire past 7+ weeks.

As we've been anticipating all week, our weather scenario is indeed getting more and more interesting.  Tropical moisture is surging back and forth along the leading-edge slopes of the Himalayan ranges, combining with instability created by the still-strong late June sunshine to produce some very healthy thundershower action in our area. The pattern from the surface through the mid- and upper-levels is looking more and more like the early stages of the monsoon, which means it is going to be hard to get much of a long-lasting intrusion of drier air from this point forward.  Average humidity is still a long way from the 80%+ we experience when the monsoon is firmly established, but we'll be heading in that direction during the coming week to 10 days.

During the new week, we can expect fluctuations in humidity, temperature, sunshine and cloudiness, although the overall trend will be toward high humidity, more frequent showers, and somewhat cooler temps.  Enjoy this monumental change of seasons!
