A dramatic turn of events this evening... as we are enjoying sunny skies for a change. It has indeed been a fickle Friday, with some wild swings between clouds, thundershowers and sunshine. A couple of brief downpours deposited 0.10" (3mm) in my rain gauge between 2:00pm and 4:00pm, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was more than that in a few spots. I recorded a high temp of just 77.9F (25.5C) -- the third day in a row we've been below 80F (27C).
The atmosphere is in a state of transition again, as the upper-level pool of colder air which has been in our area since Tuesday night fizzles out and shifts to the northeast. There should be an ever-so-gradual warming of temperatures in all levels of the atmosphere during the next several days, but the differential between lingering pockets of colder air aloft and warmer temps at the surface is going to keep the instability factor in play. That means it shouldn't be too difficult for isolated thundershowers to develop over the mountains during the afternoon/evening hours -- especially over the weekend. By Monday, the PM thunder potential may diminish somewhat.
Temperatures the last couple of days have been very pleasant for this time of year, but it still looks like we'll be warming back ABOVE normal over the course of the next few days. Our next chance of cooling down may hinge on the arrival of the first pre-monsoon rains...
