sultry solstice... (pm.20.jun.12)>

Our skies are partly cloudy and temps quite warm this evening.  Today is the summer solstice -- the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere -- and we were able to take advantage of the strong late June sunshine.  There have been only a few clouds (mainly over the mountains) today, allowing the temperature at my location in the upper part of town to shoot up to 89.6F (32.0C).

We've now made it through two-thirds of the month of June, and total rainfall stands at only 0.52" (1.3cm).  That is a miserably small amount for this stage of the month -- and direct proof that this season's pre-monsoon festivities have been virtually non-existent thus far.  An area of general high pressure in the middle and upper-levels of the atmosphere is keeping things calm and quiet over the northwest 1/3 of India, as monsoon conditions gradually advance in locations to our southeast.  This evening's computer model data continues to hint at increasing humidity and a rising chance of thundershowers by the weekend into early next week, so we may be nearing the end of this extended dry and very warm summer season we've been experiencing.

Today's temps were well above normal/average... but it's likely that the bubble of very warm air over northwest India will erode away over the weekend, thanks to the arriving surge of tropical moisture.
