Our skies are mostly cloudy this evening, as they have been all day long. In fact, today has been the cloudiest day since the 10th of April, according to my records. Due in large part to those clouds, my high temp in the upper part of town of just 72.0F (22.2C) was the coolest since the 6th of May. What a difference... compared to what we were dealing with this time last week! In spite of all the clouds, I've only recorded a trace of rain today.
This broad area of low pressure and associated pool of colder air aloft is much more expansive than any of the computer models were hinting at. Even the strength of the mid-summer sun today wasn't enough to burn off the lingering clouds from last night's thundershowers over much of the western Himalayan region. This system will remain in the area through Thursday, and may yet generate enough instability for another couple of rounds of showers and thundershowers. It's been very difficult for us to get more than about 0.20"/5mm of rain at any one time during the last several weeks, since we're still not getting our first taste of tropical moisture up here along the front ranges of the mountains.
Will today's much cooler temperatures last? That depends on the reappearance of the sun. This early June air mass will respond quickly to a few hours of sunshine, which should put us right back close to normal for this time of year. But our weather pattern definitely doesn't favor another genuine heatwave during the next several days at least...
