A classic mid-summer evening underway, with mostly sunny skies and warm temperatures across the area. For the first time since the 1st day of June, we had no big build-up of clouds, no thunder, and no random raindrops. Although there were a few clouds over the mountains from the mid-day into the afternoon, the sunshine remained firmly in control. I recorded a high temp of 88.3F (31.3C), which was the warmest of the past ten days.
A massive ridge of high pressure in the middle and upper atmosphere has finally claimed Himachal Pradesh, causing warmer air to flow in at both the surface and the higher levels. This is only the second time this season that we are experiencing this kind of pattern, and from the looks of the weather charts, it should hang around through the weekend. There could still be a bit of instability during the afternoon and overnight hours, but our air mass should remain generally settled -- so although there could be a random thundershower at some point, sunshine should be our main feature. It is time for pre-monsoon showers and thunderstorms to be on the increase, but this year, the process is held up... not only here but across most of India.
I'm starting to wonder if we may challenge the high temperatures of the season which occurred between 30 May and 2 June, when we surpassed 90F (32C). And for our neighbors just down the hill, it looks like it's going to be heatwave: take 2 during the coming days...
