Well that was what could easily be categorized as a RAINY NIGHT! I don't know about you, but I woke up numerous times due to the consistent thunder. My rain gauge here on Tushita Road just below the Mountaineering Center shows 1.27" (3.2cm) overnight... which brings the total to 1.68" (4.3cm) in the past 24 hours. The low temp this morning is 49.3F (9.6C), and we have cloudy skies with some sprinkles and light showers scattered around the area.
As I look at all the available data this morning, I'm trying to gauge when the atmosphere might calm down. Our upper-level storm system remains over northern Pakistan, and will move slowly eastward and weaken today, but I think it probably will have enough energy left to allow another round or two of showers and thunderstorms to develop and move across Himachal Pradesh. It could be that we've already seen the heaviest rainfall... but as long as our air mass remains turbulent and unstable, anything goes. If we can muster up any sunshine today, temperatures are going to shoot upward, so we could see some wild swings, as occurred yesterday.
The rest of the week is going to be a mixed bag... with sunshine alternating with clouds and random shower or thundershower activity. A fast-moving and active jet-stream will be blowing in the high altitudes across northern India, which will prevent a turn to a totally benign and uneventful weather pattern. Temperatures, unfortunately, will likely be a bit below normal as we enter the second week of March...
