wednesday evening>

the day started off with more sunshine than we've seen in a while... but is ending with the usual clouds and very thick fog. we've had a few rumbles of thunder and some sprinkles of rain in between, but nothing measurable. with the sunshine earlier, we managed a high temp in upper mcleod ganj of 22.5C/72.5F.

we are obviously living in two worlds... 1) the clinging monsoon season, with its gloom and moisture, and 2) the coming fall season, with its drier, sunnier skies. it looks like we'll be caught between these two worlds for at least the next severals days... it is going to take some time for the monsoon to relinquish its grip on us, and allow the glorious himalayan fall weather to take over. all we can do is be patient, and continue to expect virtually anything from periods of sun, to periods of fog, to heavy downpours of rain... all of it will occur during the next several days. during this pattern it is possible to get a few hours of nice sunshine AND an hour or two of heavy rain in the same day. thus far, our total rainfall since the beginning of july is right around 77" (195cm)... and it is a good bet we'll reach 90" (228cm) before the monsoon fizzles out...
