skies are partly cloudy this evening after a day pretty much split 50/50 between clouds and sunshine. the afternoon high reached 79.9F (26.6C) for the second day in a row... we still haven't been able to bust the 80F barrier since last thursday.
there are thundershowers scattered all along the higher peaks of the front ranges of the himalayas just before sunset... from kashmir and himachal pradesh into uttar anchal and western nepal. nothing significant has occurred over the dhauladars though. the last couple of days have been pretty quiet, but it looks like the active weather is set to return during the coming day or so. an upper-level disturbance is organizing now to our northwest, and will pivot southeastward through pakistan and himalayan north india during the next 48-60 hours. i still think the prime timeframe for strong thunderstorms and significant rainfall will occur between tomorrow (wednesday) and the wee hours of friday morning. maybe i'm being optimistic, but i think rain amounts could be in the 1/2 to 1" range (1.3-2.5cm). last week, lightning caused a major fire in triund and killed hundreds of sheep and goats on the higher passes... so be aware and be prepared if you plan to be trekking on wednesday and thursday!
things will rapidly calm down on friday, with unseasonably cool temperatures for a day or two before it starts to warm up late in the weekend. it has been very nice to be spared the very warm and muggy weather that typically occurs during the may/june transition..
