the heavier rain we've been anticipating for several days arrived this afternoon. i recorded 1.38" (3.5cm) this afternoon between 1:20 and 4:45pm. thunder and occasional light rain/drizzle continue around the area at the time of this writing, so check back here for an updated rainfall total later tonight. a couple of hours of sunshine this morning boosted our high temp to 73.2F (22.9C).
satellite pics this evening show all kinds of rain and thundershower activity across northern india... from kashmir through himachal, then southward through punjab and haryana to the delhi NCR. this latest active phase of the monsoon pattern will continue into the first part of the weekend... with the likelihood of another couple of rounds of moderate to heavy rainfall. i'm still keeping an eye on computer model output suggesting quite heavy totals of 10-12cm (4-5") by late friday/early saturday.
looking further ahead, rainfall rates should diminish again by late saturday and sunday, but there is still no indication of a significant decrease in humidity, or in the generally saturated tropical character of the airmass over northern india. daily periods of clouds, fog and showers will remain in the forecast into the middle of next week (and beyond)... be sure to check the MONSOON'S DEMISE tab above if you're interested in info on the permanent retreat/withdrawal of this year's rainy season.
