the weirdness continues... (pm.16.jul.12)>

Very atypical mid-July evening weather in progress... with partly sunny skies and no showers in the area at the moment.  We did get a period of moderate to heavy thundershowers between about 1:15pm and 2:15pm which deposited 0.45" (1.1cm) in my rain gauge on Tushita Road just below the mountaineering center.  Other than that, the day has alternated between occasional clouds and sunshine, with a warmer than normal high temp of 77.5F (25.3C).

Is it July 16th?  Or is it June 16th?  Or maybe September 16th?  It definitely looks and feels more like either the pre-monsoon season, or the days at the very end of monsoon season -- not what is normally getting close to the heart of our wet season.  I'm sure the young mosses and ferns are stressed by the extended periods of sunshine, as humidity fails to remain at the saturation point for more than a few hours here and there.  There are plenty of people enjoying this unseasonably pleasant weather, but for locals across northern India who rely on heavy rains this time of year for their livelihood, there is worry.  Our close proximity to the Dhauladars is at least allowing us to receive daily showers and thundershowers, but there are many places further from the mountains which have received very little rainfall during the past week or so.

Some signs are on the horizon which indicate changes as we approach the weekend, however.  Deeper, richer and thicker tropical moisture is expected to surge back into northern India, perhaps as early as Thursday.  As this materializes, there should be a dramatic increase in clouds, fog and more consistent and persistent rains.  We shall see...!
