It is mostly cloudy with some light fog in the area this evening, and the humidity reading is hovering right around 95%. Despite the generally gray skies, there has been very little rain thus far today. We had a few very light showers trying to develop overhead between about noon and 2:30pm, but there was nothing measurable in my rain gauge in the upper part of town. Sunshine for awhile during the morning, and again briefly during the mid- to late afternoon boosted my high temp to 76.5F (24.7C).
We've had more than 12" (30.5cm) of rain in the past 15 days -- that's more than we received during all of April, May and June combined, but it is less than average for this stage of July. The four-five weeks from mid-July until mid-August are typically the rainiest of the monsoon season and the entire year here in McLeod Ganj, but things have been rather sluggish in 2012. Unless we get some decent shower development between now and midnight, today is going to be our first day of the season without measurable rainfall... I'll be watching that rain gauge tonight.
There are strong indications that changes are ahead, however. A low pressure area is already beginning to form in the northern Bay of Bengal, and is expected to drift generally westward into central India and intensify during the coming 3-4 days. This will generate a strong surge of tropical moisture back into northern India -- arriving sometime between late Thursday and Friday afternoon. We have a good chance of some periods of fog and occasional downpours in the meantime... but I think we're in for much more of a classic monsoon scenario as the weekend arrives...
