Rainfall: 0.11" (3mm) -- as of 6:00pm
Thunder is rumbling to the south and southwest of McLeod Ganj at the moment (just after 6pm), but it's partly cloudy with some random showers in town. There were a couple of periods of showers with some thunder during the early to mid-afternoon hours... but so far today, rainfall has been very light compared with nearly every day of the past week. In fact, my amount (listed above) was the smallest since exactly one week ago. We had some nice sunshine again this morning, and the humidity dropped as low as 70% for a couple of hours.
Widespread monsoon conditions have been loosening their grip on northern India during the past couple of days, as a drier westerly flow in the mid- and upper-levels of the atmosphere pushes the really juicy tropical moisture well off to the south and east. Of course it's a different story all along the front ranges of the Himalayas, from extreme northern Pakistan through northern India and into Nepal -- where reserves of moisture remain entrenched, and are providing fuel for mainly afternoon/evening shower and thundershower development. This is the dynamic that will most likely continue for at least a couple of weeks to come, and perhaps through the entire month of September.
At the same time, we're definitely getting some extended periods of sunshine during the morning hours, along with a few hours of lower humidity as well. This will dry out the ferns and mosses and cause them to turn from deep green to yellow in the coming days. Already I'm noticing some traces of yellow on the ferns clinging to the trees around my house.
So... enjoy the slow and subtle changes, but don't expect the fog to disappear or the sudden downpours of rain to come to an end anytime in the near future.
