the month of june 2010 will be over in about 3 hours. here are the major stats for the month. temperatures were recorded at the top of mcleod ganj on dharamkot road, just below the mountaineering center, and only 3 minutes walk below tushita meditation center. precipitation was recorded just one minute up the hill from the dalai lama's temple complex:
HIGH TEMP: 31.4C / 88.6 F... on 19 june (saturday)
LOW TEMP: 13.1C / 55.6F... on 8 june (tuesday)
TOTAL RAINFALL: 9.31 inches / 23.6 centimeters
the heaviest rainfall occurred on thursday and friday, 24-25 june, when we had 3.9 inches (9.9 centimeters). considering the fact that the monsoon arrival is a bit late, our june rainfall total is very impressive.

wednesday evening>
oh what a weird day... a few glimpses of sun this morning, otherwise we've been socked in with clouds, haze and light fog. it is muggy, with not even the slightest breeze for most of the day, and a high temp at the weathergeek office of just 25c/77f. the satellite photos this evening are showing a good amount of cloudiness convering virtually all of jammu/kashmir and himachal pradesh, along with a good chunk of punjab. weak upper-air disturbances continue to slide southeast through the area, and in collusion with increasing tropical moisture, could produce some showers and thunderstorms at any time during the next few days.
the computer models are finally getting more aggressive with bringing bonafide monsoon moisture into the area by the weekend. i think it is evident by looking out the window that we are heading that way. the atmosphere is becoming pregnant with moisture and energy, so be prepared for increasing rainfall potential day by day...
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: mostly cloudy and muggy, with a chance of showers and/or a few thunderstorms developing.
low: 21C (69F)
THURSDAY: partly to mostly cloudy and muggy. good chance of a few showers or storms.

partly cloudy skies and 20c/68f prior to sunrise on this wednesday morning. the satellite pic this morning shows quite a few clouds over himachal pradesh, punjab and kashmir, with a cluster of thunderstorms over central pakistan. no major changes in the forecast... we'll see a mix of clouds and sun along with increasing humidity during the next few days... with that ever-present possibility of showers and thunderstorms popping up and dumping moderate to heavy rains in just a few hours time. monsoon conditions could materialize at any time during the next 2-3 days, as moisture continues to creep northwestward. the cloud bases will be lowering, and fog will start to develop in the valleys. today is the last day of punjabi summer holidays, which is a non-meteorological indication that the monsoon is now free to make its move (!)...

tuesday evening>
rather ambiguous weather conditions around these parts. we had a beautiful sunny and warm morning... followed by a thundery and rainy and cool afternoon and evening. the high temp around noontime was 27c/81f, and the official rainfall total between 2 and 6pm was 0.65" (17mm). today i noticed thick moss forming on many tree trunks, and moss and mold developing on sidewalks and roads way up here at the top of mcleod ganj. so... although we are still not getting our "official" monsoon onset (yet), things are definitely progressing in that direction.
the monsoon is here when the ground meets the sky...meaning, when we find ourselves living in a cloud. that foggy, 100% humidity stuff has still not materialized, and the chai-drinking, chain-smoking and card-playing weathermen down at the india meteorological department have refused to acknowledge any sort of northward advance of the monsoon for the past 11 days or so. the best thing for us to do is just brace ourselves for stickier, muggier weather, along with periods of heavy showers and storms which will increase in number and intensity during the next several days.
TUESDAY NIGHT: partly to mostly cloudy, with a few more showers and possibly a thunderstorm overnight.
low: 18C (65F)

tuesday morning>
21c/69f with clear skies early on this tuesday morning. the satellite pic is showing clear skies across most of kashmir, himachal and uttar anchal... but there are a few thunderstorms in central pakistan, and scattered across punjab. computer models continue to gradually bring in tropical moisture and increase rain chances through the week, but as i mentioned last night... we'll just have to "eye-ball" it day by day, since the modelling solutions obviously don't have a good handle on things. so... until there is an obvious shift in the pattern, we'll continue to expect periods of sunshine (mainly in the mornings), with increasing clouds and scattered thundershowers (mainly in the afternoons and evenings). heavy rainfall is possible if and when these showers materialize. mugginess will be on the increase, and temperatures on the DEcrease as we head toward the weekend...

monday evening>
it is definitely a "gift" to get such a beautiful day this late in june. clouds built up over the mountains this afternoon, but failed to produce so much as a rumble of thunder. the high temp at the weathergeek office at the top of mcleod ganj was 28c/82f... with moderate humidity. all computer model guidance continues to gradually increase humidity and rain potential throughout the week... but they've been doing that few a few days now, and the monsoon has still failed to make that awaited northward surge. from here forward, it will just be a day-by-day call. past experience says that the onset of monsoon conditions can be sudden and rather dramatic. in the meantime... expect pleasantly warm temps, increasing mugginess, and occasional thunderstorms erupting mainly during the PM hours. and keep tuned to the weathergeek for breaking meteorological info...

monday morning>
partly cloudy skies and 19c/67f before sunrise on this monday morning. despite all the ugly clouds and the wind last evening, significant rainfall was hard to come by. we'll try for another shot later today... deep moisture just to our south and southeast, and a northwest flow in the upper atmosphere will team up to produce a few storms as we move into the afternoon hours. the satellite pic this morning shows monsoon conditions advancing into southeast rajasthan and central UP, as well as parts of nepal and uttar anchal. we have now come to the "normal" date for official monsoon onset in the dharamsala area (28-29 june)... but we may yet have to wait another few days. people sometimes ask, "how do you KNOW the monsoon has arrived?"... and i always say, "don't worry, you'll know".!!

sunday evening>
it was a sunny morning... followed by a mostly cloudy afternoon with a one and a half hour period of light to moderate thundershowers. the high temp was only 26c/79f, with less than 0.10" of rainfall reported near the temple. other showers and storms are converging on the area this evening, however, so it is likely that we'll see a more significant amount of rainfall overnight. the coming week will feature increasing humidity, increasing rain chances, and lower temperatures, as the monsoon continues to advance into the area. so far, we haven't seen the arrival of the ominous thick fog bank rolling up from kangra valley which is a sure sign of "official" monsoon conditions. it seems that we're getting a couple of grace days...which i'm sure we'll come to be thankful for in a month or so...

sunday morning>
clear skies, quite humid, and 20.5c/69f early on this sunday morning. it has now been about 45 hours since we've had any rainfall, but our oasis of dry weather should be coming to an end relatively soon. the satellite photo this morning shows clear skies over kashmir, most of himachal pradesh and punjab, but scattered showers and thunderstorms are roaming across parts of rajasthan, haryana, the delhi NCR, and uttar pradesh. that is an indication that tropical moisture is surging northward again. as the sunshine works on our moist atmosphere this morning, we should see a build-up of clouds, with increasing thunderstorm chances into the afternoon.
the bottom line... don't get too attached to the sunshine this morning!> rain and thunderstorm chances will steadily increase into the middle of the week, with the likelihood of an official monsoon onset within the next few days. areas of fog will become more prevalent, along with periods of heavy rainfall.

saturday evening>
we've managed to pull off an absolutely beautiful saturday thus far... 100% sunshine into mid-morning, lots of clouds over the mountains during the afternoon, but only a few rumbles of thunder. the high temp at the weathergeek office was 27c/80f, but it has been rather humid. the satellite pic shows thunderstorms TRYING to develop all along the front ranges of the himalayas... from kashmir to nepal, but so far very few of them are really busting loose. the view from space also shows deep monsoon moisture fueling big thunderstorms into central uttar pradesh... which is an indication that the monsoon is indeed beginning to push further into northern india. it is likely that we won't get by with a dry sunday... and as we move through the first half of next week, humidity will be on the increase, and monsoon rains will become more and more of a good bet. as of today, the india meteorological department is forecasting a delhi arrival of the monsoon within 4 days or so... since our onset is typically a couple of days earlier than delhi's, that means we don't have much longer to wait.

saturday morning>
we're enjoying a respite from the heavy rains of thursday into early friday... skies are clear early on this saturday morning, with a very comfortable temp of 18c/65f. the tropical moisture which surged into the area a couple of days ago has temporarily retreated... as i mentioned before, as the monsoon moves in, it often "surges and retreats" a few times before it becomes firmly entrenched. there is still a pocket of drier and warmer air in the mid-levels of the atmosphere that is preventing monsoon conditions from completely sweeping across northcentral and northwest india... but with each surge/advance, the moisture will be able to penetrate further, and remain longer.
today may be the best day of the next 4 or 5... with a good amount of sunshine, along with pleasantly warm temps. but increasing moisture and increasing rain chances will be the rule from sunday through wednesday...

friday evening>
rain ended around 830am, and the rest of the day has been dry with partly to mostly cloudy skies. we're still watching a series of weak upper-level disturbances to our west, which could easily stir up more showers and storms as they move across the very moist airmass in place across the area. rainfall since 4pm yesterday has been almost 4"... by far the greatest 24 hour rainfall of 2010. today's high was held to only 23c/73f, and with the very humid, tropical air that is now settling into the area, our days of temps in excess of 30c are probably over until after the monsoon departs in september.
for the next several days, expect a few hours of sunshine here and there, increasing humidity, along with periods of showers and storms. the monsoon is still surging northwestward, and will gradually engulf all of himachal pradesh by early next week. this means that the potential for heavy rainfall will become greater and greater, and humidity levels in the 80-100% range will become more common. it won't be long til we are living in a perpetual fog bank!

well... if the monsoon isn't OFFICIALLY here, then it's very very close. heavy thundershowers yesterday afternoon and evening brought 1.75" (45mm) of rain, and thunderstorms overnight have given way to steady moderate rain just before sunsrise early this morning. the satellite pic shows the entire area socked in with clouds, as a potent upper-air disturbance interacts with increasing tropical moisture. when the monsoon first advances, it does so in surges, with temporary retreats. that seems to be the phase we are in. this means that over the next few days the moisture will retreat again for a day or so, but each time a new surge comes in, it will remain for a longer period, until eventually, a nearly saturated (80-100% humidity) tropical airmass will become entrenched. temperatures will be much cooler and more pleasant... but the trade-off is the higher humidity (early this morning it is only 16c/60f). an overnight rainfall report will be added here as soon as i hear from my weathergeek assistants down by the temple later this morning... i have a feeling we've had 1-2" overnight.>

humid, cloudy, off and on moderate to heavy thundershowers... it has been a very "monsoon-ish" afternoon and evening. although the official northern limit of the monsoon has moved little in the last couple of days, there is no doubt that we are getting surges of monsoon/tropical moisture here at the foot of the dhauladars in himachal. from here on, days of dry weather are going to be hard to come by. we have a weak west-northwest flow in the middle and upper atmosphere, and rich southeast flow of humid air at the surface, and that will keep periods of showers and thunderstorms in the forecast for the next several days. a few hours of sunshine here and there will only serve to increase the heat and humidity, providing fuel for more thundershowers. as we move through the weekend into early next week, official monsoon conditions will become more likely. OK folks... here we go.... :-)

a bumpy night... thunderstorms with strong winds blew through the area just after midnight, but are long gone just before sunrise. we're waking up to 21c/70f, with partly cloudy skies. a potentially stormy pattern remains in place today and tomorrow, as northwest flow aloft continues to interact with increasing moisture moving in from the southeast. THEN, as we get into the weekend, we have to turn our eyes to the mass of tropical, monsoon moisture which is lurking to our southeast. experience from years past dictates that this moisture can surge very rapidly into himachal pradesh when surface and mid-level winds are blowing from the southeast. however, we will have a weak westerly flow going through much of the weekend, which may prevent monsoon conditions from reaching us until next week. for now, we'll still target sunday-tuesday (27-29 june)... but check back for up-to-date info...

wednesday evening>
ominous-looking skies and rumbling thunder early this morning failed to deliver. sunshine was out in full-force by late morning, with not a drop of rain to be found. the high temp at the weathergeek office hit 28c/83f... with humidity building during the afternoon. the sunshine and lack of rain today only means that the atmosphere is storing up energy for later. thunderstorms may develop overnight, but are even more likely on thursday into friday, as moisture increases, and a series of disturbances slide in from the northwest. temperatures will gradually drop as we move into the weekend, in response to less sunshine and increasing humidity.
*MONSOON WATCH** it's been very interesting watching the leading edge of monsoon moisture the past couple of days. although there has been very little advance across central india, there has been a "slow creep" of tropical moisture northwestward along the front range of the himalayas. it has almost completely engulfed nepal, and is surging now into uttar anchal (our neighboring state to the east). it is still a good possibility that official monsoon conditions will arrive in the dharamsala area by late this weekend...

wednesday morning>
a thunderstorm is slipping by just to the south-southwest of mcleod ganj early this morning, with the satellite photo showing another area of thunderstorms to our northwest. that means it would be be a good idea to prepare for some rain again today. we're back in a very active pattern, with weak northwest flow in the upper atmosphere, and east-southeast flow of rich, moist air at the surface. that spells a mixed bag of weather for us through the rest of the week... periods of sunshine between bouts of shower and thunderstorm action. yesterday we picked up a solid half-inch of rain (13mm), and that could be repeated on any given day. temperatures, as mentioned before, are entirely dependent on sunshine. with a few hours of sun, it will be VERY warm and muggy, but if we get saved by the clouds, then temps will be relatively comfortable. in general, i've lowered temps for the remainder of the week.
still watching for a monsoon arrival perhaps on sunday. deep moisture is creeping along the front range of the himalayas from central nepal into uttar anchal, and could surge rapidly in our direction in the next few days.

tuesday evening>
today was WAY cooler than expected... with periods of rain and thunderstorms starting just before noon and continuing into the evening. we only had a few peeks of sunshine between thundershowers. the airmass over northern india is still very warm, but our actual temperatures are entirely dependent on sunshine, or lack thereof. since rain chances will be increasing during the rest of the week, we'll revise our high temp forecasts downward. right now we're being hit from the west with a stream of weak upper-air disturbances, and from the east with the advance of pre-monsoon moisture. that means... keep the umbrella handy... but also be prepared to sweat when the sun comes out. the joys of late june!
*MONSOON WATCH** the first traces of monsoon moisture are making their way along the front ranges of the north indian himalaya now. the offical northern "limit" of the monsoon extends from extreme southern rajasthan to eastern uttar pradesh and eastern nepal, but this line could surge to the north-northwest rapidly during the latter part of the week, bringing bonafide monsoon rains here by late saturday or sunday. check for updates throughout the week...

tuesday morning>
partly cloudy skies and 22c/71f before sunrise on this tuesday morning. our big dome of high pressure which has been the dominant weather feature for the past several days is gradually breaking down. that will make way for a few weak disturbances in the upper atmosphere to move through the area, each one having the potential to stir up a few thundershowers. temperatures will remain very warm for the next 2-3 days, but then we'll start to cool off, as deep moisture creeps in from the east. that deep moisture is associated with the leading edge of the monsoon, which appears to be ready to sweep across much of north india during the next week or so. SO... get ready for a dramatic rise in humidity, and the arrival of tropical rains, perhaps as early as late saturday or sunday. stay tuned for updates twice daily!

monday evening>
total rainfall yesterday afternoon through early this morning was 0.6" (15mm)... but the sunshine returned in full force today, and allowed temperatures to rebound to 30c+/86f+ across the area. a few thundershowers have been trying to develop this evening, and may yet yield some rainfall overnight. our very warm and increasingly muggy weather will continue through wednesday, but it does appear that some cooling is on the horizon for the end of the week, along with a chance of more widespread shower and thunderstorm activity. indications are pointing to a dramatic advance of the monsoon over the weekend, which could bring it into the dharamsala area by sunday the 27th. the weathergeek office will be keeping a close eye on it, and will let you know the very latest developments...

monday morning>
the alarm clock went off VERY early on this monday morning... with thunder, wind and rain starting around 415am. the satellite pic shows one lone cluster of thunderstorms over west-central himachal pradesh... that's us! these storms should quickly dissipate this morning, with a return to sunshine and rapidly warming temps. it's been great to have a bit of relief since yesterday afternoon, but this summer airmass is still in place, and that means we'll be experiencing very warm weather through at least wednesday. the good news is that the occasional shower or storm could occur (mainly during the afternoons and evenings) virtually any day of the week.
*MONSOON WATCH** the northern limit of the monsoon is now hung up along a line from extreme southern rajasthan to central bihar and eastern nepal. there will be little movement during the next 3-4 days, but a surge to the north and northwest will occur by the weekend. we could still see an arrival here around the 27th-28th of june. check for updates daily...

sunday evening>
ahhhh.... sweet relief! after a very warm and sunny sunday morning and early afternoon, thundershowers managed to pop up, and have brought cooler temps, along with at least .25" (7mm) of rainfall. but DO NOT be deceived... the very warm airmass of the last few days will remain in place into the middle of the week, and that means we can still "look forward" to some of the warmest temperatures of the year, along with plenty of summer-solstice sunshine. a few pools of colder air aloft will bring us a continuing chance of heat-relief in the form of late afternoon thundershowers, but widespread and long-lasting rainfall will have to wait a week or so until the monsoon arrives...

sunday morning>
it's 23c/74f very early on this sunday morning... and today has the potential for being the hottest of the year. actually both monday and tuesday could be in that category as well. our big dome of high pressure aloft is still in place, and that will keep our very warm and dry weather pattern going until the middle of the week. the only exception to the rule could be some random, isolated late afternoon thundershowers over the mountains, due to the heat rising into relatively cooler air aloft. we're now seeing indications that changes are on the way by the latter half of the week. temps will start to cool down a bit, and shower/thunderstorm chances will increase. in fact, it is possible that monsoon moisture will begin to sneak into the area next weekend.! stay tuned for updates...

saturday evening>
another beautiful day... that makes it three in a row now without a drop of rain. we had lots of sun today, with some afternoon clouds over the mountain peaks, and a high of 31c/88f at the top of mcleod ganj. we don't expect any significant changes for the next few days... a classic summer fair-weather pattern is firmly in place, and the only chance of a "spoiler" would be if random, isolated thundershowers could pop up over the mountains during the late afternoons. temperatures will stay at their maximum levels of the year into the middle of next week...great weather to enjoy the outdoors during these last days before the arrival of the monsoon.
speaking of the MONSOON> we don't expect much movement during the next 2-3 days. this dry and hot high pressure pattern over northern india is like a huge roadblock... and will keep the leading edge of the monsoon south and east of a line from central gujarat to eastern bihar. however, there are indications that there will be a steady advance to the north and northwest by the middle and latter part of next week... so be advised that a near normal monsoon arrival date of 26-28 june in mcleod ganj is still a good bet...

yes, the warm temps are definitely back. waking up to 22c/72f early on this saturday morning, and it's likely that afternoon highs will surpass 30C for the next several days. the satellite pic this morning shows clears skies over a vast area...from central asia into northern india, with monsoon clouds and rains evident over about the southern 2/3 of india. the very strong area of mid- and upper level high pressure will remain in place across pakistan and northern india for the next several days. however, with the heat building in the afternoon, it will not be impossible to see isolated thunderstorms developing over the mountains. SUN and HEAT will be the main features of our weather into the middle of next week... but just be aware of the outside chance of afternoon thunder...

friday evening>
we've now had two days in a row without a drop of rain... and temperatures continue their rapid warm-up. the high this afternoon at the weathergeek office was 30c/86f... with further warming expected over the weekend into early next week. the middle and upper levels of the atmosphere have also warmed, and without much cold air aloft, it's hard to generate the instability for thunderstorms... we call it a "cap". with this cap in place, a dry forecast looks good for a few more days. there could always be an isolated thundershower during the late afternoon... but those chances are looking slim until perhaps the middle of next week.
*MONSOON WATCH** as expected, the northeastern front of the monsoon has advanced eastward from kolkata to kathmandu in the last couple of days. but further west, the leading edge has stalled out across gujarat and madhya pradesh. there will likely be little north and eastward movement for the next couple of days...with this blocking pattern in place.

friday morning>
crystal clear skies early this friday morning, with temps around 20c/68f. every single indication is pointing to a very dramatic warming trend during the next 4-5 days, along with slim chances of any rainfall. this is kind of hard to believe for this time of year... but it does appear that a very strong upper-level high pressure center will bring some baking temps, and squash most, if not all wanna-be thunderstorms. the 24th-27th of may was our warmest few days of the summer season, with high temps right around 32c/90f, and we could be getting close to those numbers over the weekend and early next week. the monsoon's leading edge will stall across central india in response to this summer fair-weather system for a few days.

thursday evening>
what a great day! lots of sunshine this morning, a slight build-up of clouds that brought a few rumbles of thunder during the early afternoon, and a high temperature of 27c/81f. still watching a couple of isolated thundershowers off to our west this evening which could affect us... but after that, a change in weather patterns is on the way. rain and thunderstorm chances will all but disappear as we head into the weekend... as a strong ridge of high pressure rapidly builds across the area. this will also bring a considerable warming trend, with temperatures over the weekend into early next week expected to be near the warmest of the summer.
*MONSOON WATCH** the leading front of the monsoon extends from central gujarat to just west of kolkata, and then northward to the eastern nepal border. this position is now a few days behind the normal schedule. however, the eastern front should rapidly accelerate westward across nepal during the next few days. a monsoon onset date of around 28 june still looks good for us.!

thursday morning>
skies are mostly clear just before sunrise on this thursday morning with a cool temp of 17c/62f. we picked up about 1/3 inch (8mm) of rain yesterday afternoon and evening... and we could still see a bit more shower and thunderstorm action later today, associated with the last gasp of our recent upper-level disturbance. then... get ready for a MAJOR warm-up as we head into the weekend. computer models are very aggressive with building in a very strong area of high pressure in the middle and upper levels of the atmosphere, which will produce some of the warmest air of the summer season. it will also put a "cap" on thunderstorm development for two or three days. this means the northward advance of the monsoon will be held off for several more days at least, as we enjoy (what could be) summer's last big hurrah...

wednesday evening>
the first half of our wednesday was comfortable and nice with some sunshine... the second half has been wet and breezy and chilly. we've had almost continuous thunder since around 2pm, with periods of moderate to heavy rainshowers. the upper-air disturbance responsible for the storminess is centered over kashmir this evening, and will continue to weaken as it moves slowly to the east. occasional thundershowers will remain with us through thursday, but then we have some dramatic changes on the way. a strong area of high pressure at the surface and aloft will be building into the area by the weekend... and is expected to bring us a few days of mostly dry weather, along with a return to summer-time temperatures. enjoy it, because the arrival of the monsoon is likely only about 10 days away...

wednesday morning>
the upper-level disturbance we've been talking about recently is spinning over western kashmir this morning. as it moves east-southeast and weakens, it will bring us a continuing chance of a few showers and thunderstorms during the next 24-36 hours or so. be on the lookout for rapid and sudden changes both today and thursday, in between periods of sunshine. as this system moves out, a rather strong ridge of high pressure will build in... and that will bring us warmer temperatures, lower chances of "spoiler" thunderstorms, and increasing amounts of sunshine as we head into the weekend.
*MONSOON WATCH** according to the india meteorological department, the northern limit of the monsoon has stalled across central india. in the last couple of days it has failed to make much of a push further to the north... which is now putting it 3-5 days behind normal schedule. we'll have to keep a close eye on it to see if that will mean a delay in the onset for us... most likely it will surge northward again after a few days... so our arrival date of 28-29 june still looks pretty good. will update regularly...

tuesday evening>
we've had a few periods of sunshine today, in between lots of clouds... but those clouds have only yielded a few sprinkles up til 6pm. a strong upper-level disturbance remains over northern pakistan this evening, and is producing an extensive area of cloudiness and scattered showers and thunderstorms over a wide area of the western himalayas. this system will weaken as it drops southeast tonight, wednesday, into early thursday... but we'll stay in the line of fire for periods of showers and storms. high pressure aloft will strengthen as we head into the weekend, and that will bring a significant warming trend, as well as squash most of the rain potential for a couple of days at least. it appears that we could see some of the warmest temps of the summer season by saturday and sunday...

a pocket of cold air in the mid- and upper levels of the atmosphere is situated over northern pakistan this morning. as this feature slides south and east during the next 2-3 days, and surface temperatures slowly warm up, instability will increase... which means we have a good chance of occasional showers and thunderstorms right through thursday. the satellite pic this morning shows numerous patches of cloudiness, which will keep the sunshine rather limited today. it looks like things change significantly by the weekend, however... with high pressure in the upper atmosphere building in, and heat building also at the surface. that should shut off the thunderstorms for at least a couple of days, and bring in one more period of very warm temperatures before the monsoon's arrival...

monday evening>
it's been a mixed bag monday. the high temp was only 24c/75f early this afternoon... with .25" (6mm) of rainfall from showers very early in the morning, and again during the mid-afternoon hours. the satellite pic is quite a mess this evening, showing all kinds of clouds and scattered thundershowers extending from central asia through northern pakistan into kashmir, himachal pradesh and punjab. there is a rather unorganized series of upper-level disturbances responsible for this unsettled weather... and that will keep scattered showers and storms in the forecast for the next few days. BUT... warmer air is trying to build across the plains of northern india, so we do expect a gradual warm-up, along with increasing periods of sunshine between (mainly) afternoon thundershowers.
*MONSOON WATCH** the northern limit of the monsoon has now crept into extreme southern gujarat, central madhya pradesh and eastern bihar. heavy monsoon rains are now in full swing across kerela, goa, mumbia and pune...

*UPDATE* showers and thundershowers are moving through the area early on this monday morning. the satellite photo shows a circulation center over southwestern kashmir, moving to the east. most of the showers should be east of here by mid-morning with a return to sunshine. however, be on the lookout for more random showers or storms popping up during the afternoon. the rest of the week looks like more of the same... generally dry during the morning hours, with best chances for thundery action in the afternoons and evenings. temps will be gradually warming up...

sunday evening>
a brief thundershower around 230pm only brought a few sprinkles of rain... but there are still scattered showers and thunderstorms evident on the satellite pics this evening. not a bad weather pattern, really... a little something for everyone. and that theme shows no signs of coming to an end during the next several days. these are the last gasps of the summer season, so enjoy the long periods of (mainly morning) sunshine, the relatively warm temps, and the hit and miss thundershowers during the PM. the northern limit of the monsoon is advancing, and will reach a line from southern rajasthan to eastern uttar pradesh within the next 3-4 days. we still expect a near normal monsoon arrival here... sometime during the last few days of june.

sunday morning>
the official rainfall report from near the dalai lama's temple for saturday was just 0.10" (3mm)...which isn't much to show for about 4 hours of clouds, thunder and off and on showers. we're waking up to sunny skies on this sunday morning... but it is quite likely that clouds will develop again towards the afternoon hours, with some scattered thunderstorms popping up. at this point it looks like we'll have more sunshine than yesterday, though, and that means temperatures will be a bit warmer. expect more of the same as we head into the new week... warm temps, a good amount of sun, but the daily risk of afternoon storms. enjoy these last 10-15 days of "summer" before the monsoon arrives!!

saturday evening>
after a nice morning, our saturday went south during the afternoon. numerous thunderstorms developed along the front range of the himalayas (all the way from kashmir to central nepal), in response to rapidly warming surface temperatures combined with cool air and a bit of rotation up around 15,000-17,000ft (near 5000m). this same weather pattern will persist for the next few days, which means a continuing decent chance of scattered afternoon and evening thundershowers. temperatures will be quite warm during sunny periods, but it will be chilly and breezy when those storms kick in. the best rule of thumb is to keep a "plan B" in mind if you have outdoor activities scheduled, and keep the umbrella within arm's reach.

the satellite pic this morning shows some patches of cloudiness across pakistan and northern india, drifting slowly to the east. these clouds are associated with a weak upper-level disturbance... one of many that will move through the area during the next several days. as the heat builds during the afternoons and evenings, we have to keep the mention of random showers and thunderstorms in the forecast... straight through early next week. this is a very typical pre-monsoon june pattern for us. go about your plans, but just be aware that conditions could turn sour for an hour or two on any given day... after about 3pm or so.

friday evening>
it's been a dry friday thus far... lots of sun, some billowing clouds over the mountains this afternoon, but no thunderstorms. the high this afternoon hit 28c/82.5f. no significant changes to the forecast as we head into the weekend. temperatures will continue to warm up, and the chance of mainly afternoon and evening thunderstorms remains with us. but again, any storms should be of the scattered variety, and fairly short-lived... so if you have outdoor plans, just make sure you're prepared for sudden changes. there are indications that a more substantial system could begin to move in by tuesday and wednesday of next week, bringing a better chance of more widespread rain, and cooler temps... stay tuned...

friday morning>
we picked up another quick half inch of rain early last evening in a splash-n-dash thundershower... more evidence that our water woes may be ending soon. get ready for lots of sunshine on this friday morning, with temperatures quickly warming up. however, the threat of late afternoon and evening thunderstorms will be with us again today... and that threat will be repeated each and every afternoon of the next several days. starting to sound a bit like a broken record here, but with little evidence of a significant change in the overall weather pattern, we're lacking other options! temperatures will continue their gradual warm-up into the weekend. enjoy the sunshine and warmth... just be prepared to seek shelter if/when one of these afternoon storms pops up...

we had a sunny start to our thursday, but are experiencing a windy and thundershowery finish. the high temp at the weathergeek office was 26.6c/80f. a look into the future shows a rather stagnant weather pattern right into early next week... we'll see increasingly warmer temperatures, but the pattern in the upper atmosphere will remain a bit disturbed. that means surface heat will rise into cooler and slightly turbulent air aloft, bringing a daily chance of a few showers and thunderstorms. for the most part, these thunderstorms will be rather brief, but it's a good idea to be prepared if your plans are taking you out of town and into the hills during the afternoon and evening hours.
on another note... the advance of the monsoon seems to be pretty close to the normal schedule across southern and eastern india. monsoon conditions will continue to advance toward the north and west in the next 2 weeks. currently, it appears that our average monsoon onset date of 29 june here in mcleod ganj is fairly on target...

waking up to quite a bit of scattered cloudiness across the area early on this thursday morning...leftovers from thunderstorms last night. although last evening's storm only lasted about an hour, we received exactly 1/2 inch of rain (13mm). numerous ripples and jiggles in the upper-air pattern will move through northern india during the next several days, and that will keep the mention of scattered showers and storms in the forecast. BUT, those storms will not be widespread or long-lasting, leaving us plenty of sunshine in between bouts of rainfall. the warming trend will continue as well... gradual and steady through the weekend. all in all, a typical june pre-monsoon weather pattern.

after a gorgeous wednesday, thunder clouds are gathering on the western horizon. it looks like we'll be dodging some hit and miss thunderstorms as we move into the evening hours. temperatures were much warmer today (25c/77f at the weathergeek headquarters), and that warming trend will continue all the way into the weekend. the upper-air pattern is kind of a mess... meaning, little disturbances and ripples and cold pockets aloft... and that will contribute to at least a mentionable chance of scattered showers or thunderstorms on each and every day of the extended forecast period. the vast majority of the coming days will be dry, with sunshine... but if your plans include treks and hikes and picnics, keep an eye to the sky and be prepared for sudden changes...

it's another very cool morning (13c/56f), but it appears that most of the clouds and rain have either dissipated or moved off to the east. today will mark the beginning of a dramatic warming trend which will continue right through the coming weekend. the upper-air pattern remains a bit "dirty" and unstable... which means that there is a chance of mainly afternoon and evening showers or thunderstorms on just about any day, but there will also be plenty of sunshine to go around. all in all, we'll be back to a fairly typical june, pre-monsoon pattern.

i'm not sure what the record books say (i don't think there are any), but i am thinking this must have been one of the coolest june days in history. the high temp barely made it above 16c/62f late this afternoon, after clouds and rain for most of the day. the rainfall total since last night was around 0.90" (23mm), which was very welcome indeed. now... fasten your seatbelts for a steady warming trend during the remainder of the week. in fact, it will be a good 20+ degrees warmer (F) by friday and saturday. there are a few weak upper-level disturbances which will be moving through the area during the next few days... so, as the heat builds, random thunderstorms are not out of the question on any given afternoon. keep that in mind as you're out and about...

cloudy, drizzle, and 14c/57f on this tuesday morning... feels like a late september day! the bulk of the tropical moisture passed just to our east last night, but we've still managed to get some light rain off and on for the last 12 hours or so. that system will continue breaking up as it moves over the mountains, but there will be enough moisture left over today to keep rainshowers in the forecast, along with very cool temps for this time of year. a significant warm-up is on the way starting on wednesday, but it also appears that lingering moisture and some waves of energy in the upper-atmosphere will lead to a decent shot of some afternoon storms right into the weekend. if you're a cool weather lover, enjoy today, and brace yourself for a return to summer heat by the end of the week...

steady light to moderate rain is falling early this evening. the satellite pics this afternoon and evening show the center of the former tropical cyclone very near delhi... moving east-northeast. the system has been moving very rapidly today, but should slow down and make a turn more to the north overnight. that means we are in for off and on rainshowers overnight... a few of which could be heavy. temperatures today were very cool for this time of year... not even reaching 21c/70f at the weathergeek office. the cool, rainy-ish weather will continue tomorrow, but then a return to normal june weather is expected for the rest of the week. in fact, it'll be very warm by the weekend. in the meantime... enjoy the rain tonight...

very interesting weather scenario during the next 36 hours... skies are overcast early on this monday morning, with temperatures around 20c/67f. the mass of tropical moisture we've been talking about the last couple of days is now centered over southwestern rajasthan, and is moving slowly toward the northeast. the satellite pic shows an extensive shield of mid- and high clouds covering virtually all of northwest india. it appears right now that the center of this system will pass just to our southeast, but widespread rain and thunderstorms are expected to accompany it, and we should get in on some of that action later today, through tuesday. we definitely won't be seeing much sunshine before wednesday... and temperatures will be quite cool for this time of year. a return to drier and more seasonably warm weather is expected for the second half of the week...

sun pm. 06.06.10
wrapping up a beautiful sunday. the high temperature this afternoon was very close to 27c/80.5f, with a good amount of sunshine, and low humidity. the next item on the agenda is the huge blob of tropical moisture which currently extends from southern/coastal pakistan northeastward across rajasthan, and into the southern half of punjab. one computer forecast solution is bringing in 3" (77mm) of rain here for monday and tuesday. this could be WAY overdone, but it points at least to the potential for some significant rain and thunderstorm activity during the first part of the week. temperatures will be way cooler than normal if the clouds and rain actually develop. drier and warmer weather is expected for the middle and latter part of the week...

the upper-level disturbance which brought us rain and thunderstorms on thursday into friday night is now spinning into western china. the satellite pic is showing gloriously clear skies now from the caspian sea all the way into the himalayas of northern india. further south, however, from southern pakistan into rajasthan, the remains of a tropical cyclone are bringing thick clouds and heavy rains. it looks like our sunday will be very very nice... with plenty of sun and comfortably warm temperatures. but be on the lookout for changes on monday! some of that tropical moisture is expected to get pulled up in our direction, and that means we have a decent chance of picking up some heavy rainfall on monday into tuesday. the computer solutions are still a bit contradictory on this one, so keep advised if you have outdoor plans...

what a great saturday. the massive storm last night cleaned out and stabilized the atmosphere, preventing any additional showers and storms from developing so far today. there is still a shot at a couple of passing thundershowers tonight or sunday, but we're not expecting anything as dramatic as what happened last night. the high this afternoon at the weathergeek office was 25c/77f, which is a GIFT for this time of year. those relatively pleasant temps will continue right through the next several days. still keeping a close eye on a blob of tropical moisture associated with a former cyclone in the arabian sea. today, it is bringing torrential rains to southern pakistan. that system will move into our area on monday and tuesday, and could bring us some heavy rain... a foretaste of the coming monsoon...

the forecast is very late this morning... due to the 14+ hour electricity blackout from the vicious storm last night. rainfall was in the 0.7-0.8" range across mcleod ganj (almost 20mm), and we had wind gusts which were estimated around 60mph (95kph). skies are now mostly sunny (as of 11am IST), but the chance of a thunderstorm remains in the forecast for this afternoon and evening, and again on sunday afternoon. temperatures are very pleasant, and should remain that way for the next few days. the next big event we have our eyes on is a mass of tropical moisture surging northeast from the arabian sea. rain and thunderstorm chances will increase again for monday into tuesday, as this deep moisture bumps up against the mountains. heavy rainfall is possible...

one round of thundershowers this morning only delivered a few minutes of rain... then the sun came out again and made for a warmer-than-expected afternoon. the computer models have been flipping and flopping all over the place with the forecast scenario over the next few days. there remains a deep trough of low pressure just to our northwest, which is sinking southeast and weakening. the remnants of a tropical cyclone in the arabian sea are also being drawn into the equation. all that to say... rain and thunderstorm chances will stay with us all the way through next 5 days. in between storms, however, we could see enough sunshine to keep temperatures on the comfortable side (and below normal for june). late monday into tuesday has to be watched for the potential for HEAVY rain... as the tropical cyclone mess moves in. quite a mixed bag, eh??

apart from a few sprinkles around 4am, the night was dry and quiet... and our friday is dawning with mostly clear skies. the satellite pic shows a scattering of clouds and thundershowers from central asia, south through kashmir, the punjab, pakistan, and southward into the arabian sea, where there is a strong tropical cyclone off the coast of oman. plenty of instability is available both today and saturday to stir up a few rounds of showers and storms, as these systems converge. in fact the mention of rain will stay in the forecast right through tuesday... when the remains of the tropical cyclone could arrive on our doorstep. temperatures will be on the cool side of normal for the next several days. definitely an active few days of weather coming up...

this morning's rainfall of 1/2" (13mm) was the most we've received at one time since the 5th of may. and it appears that is only the beginning of what we can expect during the next 2-3 days. the forecast is becoming more and more complicated, but the basic scenario is this: a strong disturbance aloft will continue to push into the area, tapping tropical moisture being pulled in from the arabian sea. that means a very good chance of occasional showers and thunderstorms... some of which could produce heavy rain, hail and some very gusty winds. temperatures were quite a bit cooler today, and will be unseasonably cool as we head into the weekend. the first part of next week is a big question mark, but for now will attempt to bring in some drier and slightly warmer air...

there has already been some pre-dawn thunder on this thursday morning, and skies are cloudy with a few sprinkles at sunrise. the upper-level disturbance we've been waiting for is now moving into the area... it will intensify as it taps into some tropical mositure, then slow down and remain over northern india right into the weekend. the chance for showers and thunderstorms will increase each day through saturday... and it's looking like there could be some heavy rainfall with a few of these storms. the warm temps of the first part of the week will vanish for several days, with a turn to some unseasonably cool temperatures. even into early next week the chance of showers will remain... although temps will rebound a bit by monday...

awesome summer weather on this wednesday... a mix of clouds and sun, warm temps, and so far, no thunderstorms. but changes are coming quickly! the satellite pic this evening shows a severe wrinkle in the jetstream progressing into northern pakistan... which will move into kashmir late tonight and thursday. the satellite is also showing widespread thunderstorm activity throughout pakistan, into central parts of kashmir. the bottom line is that this unsettled weather will continue to translate eastward during the next 24 to 36 hours... and that means an increasing chance of stormy weather, and a gradual end to the very warm conditions. in fact, it is looking downright chilly (by june standards) over the weekend...

quite an interesting forecast scenario shaping up the next few days. we'll see a good amount of sunshine today, but a wave of thunderstorms may develop by the mid- or late afternoon, due to the mounting heat and humidity, and an approaching upper-level disturbance. this disturbance will combine with a huge mass of tropical moisture moving northeast from the arabian sea to keep showers and thunderstorms in the forecast right through the weekend. temperatures will start to cool down on thursday... with unseasonably cool temps especially likely on saturday. if you have outdoor plans during the next several days, keep tabs on the forecast and a close eye on the sky...

well... the weathergeek got outsmarted by a thundershower this afternoon. the temperatures at the surface apparently were warm enough to punch into the colder air in the upper atmosphere, bringing us another one of those very low rain-producing, but windy and thundery concoctions. tomorrow will be another very warm day, with increasing humidity... but the headliner is a strong disturbance over northern afghanistan which is heading steadily in our direction. most of wednesday will be dry, but the chance for showers and thunderstorms sky-rockets by thursday and friday (and even into saturday). much cooler air will move in by friday as well... so enjoy these warm temps while they last...

june has arrived... and the month will kick off in fine fashion, with lots of sunshine and very warm temperatures. in fact, highs this afternoon will likely reach 32c/90f in the lower part of mcleod ganj, near the dalai lama's temple and residential complex. even up in naddi and dharamkot highs this afternoon will likely reach 30c/86f. the warm and mainly dry weather will continue on wednesday, but a turn to stormy weather still looks likely for the latter part of the week. this time of the year thunderstorms can be very intense, so keep that in mind if you're planning outdoor activities from thursday through the weekend...
