Thursday's stats:
Low temp: 37.2F (2.9C)
High temp: 46.8F (8.2C)
Precipitation: trace
There are still some patchy clouds and quite a lot of haze around the area after sunset this evening. We had nearly equal amounts of clouds and sun over the course of the day, but the haze really thickened up during the afternoon, reducing visibility substantially. The only precipitation was in the form of some brief sprinkles and very light showers which occurred during the wee hours of the morning, accompanied by some gusty winds. And... it has been one of the coldest days of this winter season.
All day I've been trying to recover from the shock of getting almost completely skipped over by the recent storm system that moved from the Middle East across northern India. As far as under-performing storms I can remember, that one may take the cake -- and interesting that it followed two systems this winter season that were definite over-achievers. But that's how it goes. Even with all the available technology these days, there are factors in play here among the various micro-climates of the north Indian Himalayas that computer models are not able to digest. Nothing is ever a sure thing.
Anyway... we've got the second in this series of upper-level systems on its way now. It is currently over northeastern Iran, and is scheduled to be right on top of Himachal Pradesh by early Saturday morning. This circulation should be even more 'wound-up' than the previous one, with even colder air aloft in association with it. But, we still lack a good batch of low-level moisture for this system to work with, so it's hard to see any widespread heavy precipitation. Scattered showers of rain, sleet and snow will become more likely by tomorrow afternoon though, with a chance of some accumulating snow somewhere around the area on Friday night, as the coldest air of the season sweeps in.
The risk of those rain/snow showers will rapidly come to an end on Saturday, with a strong ridge of high pressure expected to aggressively build across northwest India on Sunday, leading to a major warming trend for at least a couple of days.
