Some patches of high cloudiness have been moving in from the west-southwest during the very early morning hours, and that's what we have as the sun rises this Tuesday morning. The overnight low of 39.0F (3.9C) occurred just before 7:00am, and the humidity reading is 38%. There has been no precipitation since last report.
The weather charts are looking very interesting... and that means we have a lot to watch during the remainder of this week. Currently, a strong upper-level storm system is located over western Iran. It will track steadily east-northeastward during the coming 48 hours, ending up over northern Pakistan by Thursday morning. I am not super impressed with the amount of deep moisture being projected to get drawn into this system, but so far this winter, our storms/disturbances have been able to find enough moisture to produce some moderate to heavy precipitation here along the front slopes of the Himalayan ranges. We could see a few showers as early as tonight, but the best chance of significant rain and/or snowfall will be in the mid-day Wednesday through Thursday evening window. Right now computer models are showing between 3 and 4 centimeters (1.2-1.6") of precipitation in our area -- and that translates into more than a foot of snow for higher elevations that are cold enough to get an all-snow event.
There will likely be a break in the action late Thursday into early Friday, but then a second upper-level system will sweep in from the northwest -- providing another round or two of rain and snow showers on Friday into Saturday morning. There is no huge blast of unusually cold air associated with this double-barreled system, but if sustained and widespread precipitation breaks out, the freezing level will be dropping very close to our elevation -- especially Thursday and Friday. This is the typical January routine around here, so just be stocked up and prepared in case we end up with accumulating snow and extended power cuts at some point...
