**HAPPY NEAR YEAR**
As this first day of 2014 dawns, we have mostly cloudy skies, a temperature near 40F (4.4C), and a humidity reading of 80%. There is no rain at the moment, but we did have a brief thundershower around 2:30am which woke me up with a couple of sharp claps of thunder. I've only measured 0.12" (3mm) of rain since last report, but that brings the storm total up to 1.32" (3.4cm) at my location on Tushita Road below the mountaineering center. My overnight low temp has been 38.3F (3.5C).
The clouds are hanging low this morning so it's tough to get a good view, but it appears that the snow line remains pretty close to where it has been during the past 24 hours -- well above where most of us live. The weakening of the upper-level system has allowed gradual warming to occur in the mid- and upper-levels of the atmosphere, saving us from much of a snow event here at our elevation, as expected. Of course there was a lot of sleet yesterday, especially during that early evening thundershower, but it quickly melted.
So -- now we will await a clearing trend, as a ridge of high pressure forms over northern India as the main weather feature of the latter part of the week. We could still have some scattered showers roaming the mountain slopes today, but clouds should also start to break up a bit as well, and I'll be surprised if we don't get some periods of sunshine as the day wears on. Major warming is expected tomorrow (Thu) into Friday, taking us a few degrees above normal for early January, but then another turn to colder weather will get underway over the course of the weekend.
CURRENT FORECAST specifics for the coming five days can be found on the tab above.
