Monday's stats:
Early morning low temp: 36.5F (2.5C)
Afternoon high temp: 47.3F (8.5C)
Rainfall: none
The sky is clear this evening, and now that the sun is gone, it is darn cold. If you were out and about today you can attest to the fact that there is a huge difference in the "comfort factor" between sun and shade. This is the time of year when exposure to sunshine is essential! There was a lot of it today, with only a few afternoon clouds over the mountains, but actual air temperature remains at the very coldest of this winter season. Satellite photos have been showing a massive area of fog to our south -- from central Pakistan eastward all the way to Bihar. A shallow layer of cold air is entrenched in the plains, which is fairly typical for this time of year.
This time last year there was a thick new blanket of snow here, but 2013 has been bone-dry up til now, with no evidence of any active weather in our immediate future. Although there will be a couple of weak disturbances gliding east-southeastward across northern India during the remainder of this week, it still looks like a few periods of cloudiness will be all this atmosphere is going to be able to muster. The big storm system I mentioned last night is currently located over Turkey, but computer models are still forecasting it to fall apart by the time it reaches our part of the world this weekend. We're in desperate need of some winter moisture... but it certainly doesn't look promising.
A moderation in temps could be on the horizon for the latter part of the week, taking us back above normal for January after this recent cold spell.
