Scattered clouds which developed mainly over the mountains this afternoon are in the process of dissipating just past sunset this evening, but there is some haze and very light fog in the area as well. Today was the third coldest day of this winter season... right behind December 11th and 14th... when we were dealing with a stormy period with cold rain and sleet, along with heavy snowfall just above us.
There has been a weak upper-level disturbance near Srinagar today, with an associated pool of very cold air aloft. This is all that was needed to trigger cloud development over the mountains, but there was still plenty of sunshine to take the edge off the cold air mass firmly in place. It looks like we'll be cooling down even further during the coming 24 hours as we settle into the longest cold stretch of the season. These temps are pretty close to normal for January, actually, and with the help of continued sunshine, should be fairly tolerable. It's actually more pleasant up here than down on the plains where widespread winter fog is prevalent.
For those waiting for a good dose of winter precipitation, there is only bad news. The weather pattern is expected to remain quiet and uneventful for the next week or so, with very little chance of much-needed moisture. Stay tuned for any word on when we might see a return to a more active pattern.
