Update @ 1:20pm... I haven't been able to update for a few hours... but there has been more rain, more sleet in some areas, and another round of thunder and lightning since last report. Another 0.23" (6mm) has accumulated in my rain gauge, bringing the 24 hour total to 1.61" (4.1cm). It seems the computer model guidance that I was on the verge of doubting last evening has ended up being spot on. It looks like the clouds are trying to break up a bit, with some clearing indicated on satellite pics to our south and west. The clearing here along the mountains may be a slow process this afternoon, with the potential for more sudden showers. Current temp has crept up to 41.7F (5.4C)... winds are still occasionally strong and gusty.
Update @ 9:32am... Rainfall total -1.38" (3.5cm). That would be rain and melted sleet.
Update @ 9:10am... The upper-level center of our storm is now encountering the high Himalayan chains, and is being gradually sheared apart. However, low pressure at the surface is lagging behind, in Punjab, and continues to pump low-level moisture northward. There have been some thick patches of fog at my location during the past hour, with steady light to moderate rain (and sleet again). It's 38.3F (3.9C). Will check the rain gauge again when the rain eases a bit.
Update @ 8:18am... Two reports to pass along. From near Norbulingka: 1.50" (3.8cm) of rain, which included some sleet early this morning. From Naddi area: "snowfall very close". Here at the top of McLeod, I continue to have occasional moderate-heavy showers of rain, sometimes mixed with sleet. Temps holding fairly steady.
Update @ 7:35am... 0.92" (2.3cm) is my new rainfall total. I can see now that there is a light coating of snow and/or sleet at elevations just barely above McLeod, although the significant snow appears to be above Dharamkot and Naddi. Current temp: 39.4F (4.1C).
Update @ 7:11am... I just had a few minutes of sleet mixed in with the rain up here, and the temp has dropped a bit -- to 38.3F (3.5C). If we're going to get sleet/snow in McLeod, now is probably the time, as the very cold upper-level center of this storm moves overhead.
------------------------------------------------
It has been a noisy night... first the very strong winds... and since about 5:30am, the thunder. It's raining, and I have a current (6:30am) temp of 39.4F (4.1C), but the low dipped to 37.4F (3.0C) during a period of heavier rain overnight. Total rainfall since yesterday afternoon has been 0.67" (1.7cm) at my location on Tushita Road just below the mountaineering center.
The center of our very dynamic early winter storm system is not far to our northwest early this morning... perhaps right along the Himachal/J&K border. The thunder and lightning early this morning is being set off by the extreme instability associated with the core of the upper-level system. Some warmer air has been drawn into the mid-levels of the atmosphere from the south since last evening, and so far, it has kept the freezing level well above our elevation here in McLeod. As soon as we get some light this morning we'll see where the snow line is hovering.
Although this storm will finally be moving out today, our air mass is expected to remain at least marginally unstable all the way through the weekend. We could get scattered showers off and on, but hopefully some periods of sunshine as well. There is also evidence of a pretty robust warming trend getting underway by early next week.
I'll continue posting periodic updates on this page today, if necessary, so feel free to follow along.
