Monday's stats:
Low temp: 50.7F (10.4C) -- updated @ 8:00pm
High temp: 61.0F (16.1C)
Rainfall since midnight: 1.12" (2.8cm) -- updated @ 8:00pm
Cloudy skies and very light rain is the situation this evening, as a fairly miserable mid-May day comes to a close. Although there have been a a couple of dry hours here and there, rain showers and occasional thunder have dominated the events of the day, with even a period of very strong winds and near total darkness between about 3:00 and 3:30pm. Our temperatures have remained in a range that has made it feel more like March instead of May.
A complex, wobbly upper-level circulation is centered over extreme northwestern Pakistan at the moment, and will move very little during the next 24 hours or so. Its counter-clockwise flow is forcing wave after wave of moisture up against the mountains of Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh -- and that situation won't really change very much until perhaps late tomorrow or Wednesday. That means we have to remain braced for a few more rounds of rain and thunder, with another inch or more (2.5cm+) seeming quite likely before all of this finally comes to an end. From this vantage point, it appears that computer model projections were not exaggerating the situation at all. As long as the clouds and thundershowers hang on, our temps will remain very far below normal for the season.
Improving conditions will get underway starting on Wednesday, with some much more pleasant weather looking likely as we finish off the week. The risk of shower/thunder action will decrease day by day, as temperatures begin a nice rebound. I know it's still very far away, but current data points to a dry and seasonably warm scenario for the final ten days of the month.
