Tuesday's stats:
Low temp: 40.8F (4.9C)
High temp: 49.5F (9.7C)
Rainfall since 7am: trace
24 hour rainfall: 0.08" (2mm)
We have cloudy skies as the evening light fades away, at the end of a day that consisted of about 98% cloud cover. There were a couple of very brief brighter periods with a fleeting glimpse of sun, but it was definitely a grey and gloomy day with some gusty winds at times. Rain, on the other hand, wasn't much of a big deal at all. I've only recorded a trace of precipitation since this morning's report, that coming in the form of a few quick periods of drizzle, sprinkles and very light rain showers -- mainly from the morning into the early afternoon hours. The temperature failed to reach 50F (10C) at my location in the upper part of town again today, so we remain very far below normal for early March.
The center of an upper-level low pressure system has remained nearly stationary over northern Afghanistan for the past 24 hours or more. The counter-clockwise circulation continues to pump some moisture northward, keeping multi-layered clouds developing and redeveloping across a wide area from Pakistan into northwest India. So far, precipitation hasn't been much to get excited about, but we've got to get through the next 24 hours before rain chances will begin to decrease. Though I'm pretty confident we won't get rainfall totals anywhere near what we had just a few days ago, there is still a good chance of some significant rain (and snow above) between now and tomorrow evening.
The weather pattern isn't going to radically transform into a sunny and warm scenario anytime soon, but there are still indications that we will see some noteworthy improvements by the end of this week. Some lingering instability is making me a bit nervous about some scattered mainly afternoon showers or thundershowers into the weekend, but there should be a greater percentage of sunshine starting on Thursday. We'll hope for temps to be on the rise, but the high of 63F (17C) that is normal for this time of year doesn't appear likely at all.
