it's a bit cooler out there this morning than it has been in the last few days... i've recorded an overnight low of 46.2F (7.9C). our sky is partly cloudy at sunrise.

although we managed only 0.92" (2.3cm) of rain this week, since the first showers began on sunday evening, it has been an active week, weatherwise. we have been contending with this upper-level storm system for 5 or 6 days now, and it's still parked just to our northwest. yesterday it failed to stir up much in the way of shower and thundershower action, as it had done the previous two evenings, but it is still generating quite a lot of cloudiness, patches of fog, and the occasional spritzes and sprinkles of rain. it certainly has been nice to get the sunny breaks in the midst of it all, though.

as this system dies out, the general trend over the course of the next few days will be toward an improving weather scenario. although there is no super dramatic turn to full sunshine and warm temps, we should be seeing a greater percentage of sun, along with gradually more comfortable conditions into early next week. one of the computer models is showing a weak, fast-moving system skirting us on monday, but we'll keep an eye on it for another day or so before putting rain back in the forecast...

yet another moody kind of day. some nice periods of sun... thick fog during the early morning and again during the early afternoon, and a few sprinkles of rain... also during the early afternoon. the temperatures was on a roller-coaster ride, with the dramatic changes between sun and clouds/fog... but i ended up with a high of 57.2F (14.0C) which occurred around 1:00pm.

in the near-term, there is no major change to the weather story... our over-staying guest, the upper-level disturbance, remains near the pakistan/kashmir border, but has lost a lot of its steam during the past 24 hours or so. computer models have been doing a terrible job determining precipitation amounts over northern india, as we've ended up with much less rainfall than has been consistently predicted. it looks like there could still be some random showers during the coming day or so, but most likely nothing of any major consequence.

looking ahead... the overall pattern may be trying to adjust to something more calm, quiet and serene than we've experienced for quite a long time. we'll have to watch the potential for pesky clouds that sometimes get trapped along the front ranges of the mountains even during a fair weather pattern... but it IS looking hopeful.

the temp is 48.6F (9.2C) at sunrise this morning... with mostly cloudy skies and patches of fog around the area. other than a sprinkle or two, there has been no measurable rainfall since our thundershower last evening.

a nearly stationary upper-level disturbance sits along the pakistan-kashmir border, and will gradually give up its energy and die away during the next couple of days. this feature has been the main influence on our weather since sunday, and although we haven't had widespread, persistent rainfall since monday night, it has been responsible for generating the scattered showers and thundershowers since tuesday evening. as long as this circulation remains anchored just to our west, our airmass is going to remain rather unstable, so just be aware of the potential for another round or two of passing showers/thunder both today and friday. hopefully we'll see some periods of sunshine again in the midst of it all.

a large-scale pattern change is being advertised by computer models over the weekend into early next week. for the first time in a LONG time, there doesn't appear to be another storm system waiting in the wings... and that should allow us to enjoy some dry and quiet weather, along with a modest warming trend...

5:55p... thunderstorms have been rapidly developing to our south and southwest during the past hour or so, and appear to be moving to the northeast. i am hearing thunder at 5:55pm. we could have rain, thunder and lightning moving into mcleod ganj this evening. more info to come...

6:20p... thunder and lightning every 5 minutes or so. just now getting a few sprinkles up here on tushita road.

6:30p... i have fog, strong wind gusts, light to moderate rain, thunder and lightning... and a few very small hail stones. (and power which keeps going on and off..!)

6:50p... the upper-level storm system we've been following for the last 3 days or so is now centered just to the west of srinagar (probably about over gulmarg, if you're familiar with kashmir). it's simply an area of low pressure which circulates counter-clockwise (or anti-clockwise), and has been kind of like a "pin wheel", with alternating pulses of disturbed, convective (rising) air, and then drier, more stable air. the convective pulses are what have been responsible for our thick clouds, showers, thunder, etc... with some nice periods of quiet and dry weather in between. this system is now dying a slow death over kashmir... but will continue to influence our weather through tomorrow evening. maybe that's TMI (too much information), but i can't help myself sometimes...

* today's high temp was 59.4F (15.2C)... which i think is the highest temp of 2012. somebody correct me if i'm wrong. it occurred during the last blast of sunshine late this afternoon.
* rainfall today up here on tushita road below the mountaineering center was just 0.05" (1mm).
* total rainfall since this latest weather system moved in on sunday evening has been 0.92" (2.3cm).

LOSAR TASHI DELEK!...

it is mostly cloudy at sunrise this morning, but it's dry at the moment. our "sound and light show" last evening was a nice losar fireworks display, but i only received about 0.10" (2-3mm) of moisture out of the deal. there were a few sprinkles and very light showers after that, but not enough to measure. temperatures remain mild... i have an overnight low of 50.5F (10.3C) on tushita road.

there will be more areas of rain and possibly a thunderstorm or two across himachal pradesh today, as our days-old, slow-moving upper level disturbance continues to flirt with northern india. the system will move into western kashmir today, then basically sit still and weaken... and eventually die out altogether. that means we have to keep at least a 50/50 chance of some showers and thundershowers in the forecast today and into thursday... although it is likely that some areas will miss out. i still think we'll see another round or two of measurable rainfall between now and thursday evening.

no significantly cooler air is poised to sweep in, so temperatures will remain on the mild side, and largely dependent on breaks in the clouds allowing a few minutes of sunshine from time to time. expect what could be a more extended period of nicer weather next week... we have indications of a pattern change. more on that later...

it has been one heck of a moody day. clouds. bursts of sunshine. sporadic (generally light) rain showers. and all of that occuring simultaneously on a couple of occasions. i recorded a high temp of 55.6F (13.1C), with a wet rain gauge, but nothing measurable since before sunrise this morning.

i've been very surprised all day that the bulk of the precipitation stayed generally north and northeast of us, along the higher mountain ranges. waves of energy passing through in the upper atmosphere will continue to drift through northern india between now and tomorrow (wed) night, which will stir up more showers (and thunder?) from time to time, and still perhaps a period or two of moderate to heavy rain. tomorrow morning will be busy for tibetans and many foreigners as well, since it's the first day of losar... unfortunately, it could be a wet morning.

there will be a smaller chance of rain as we approach the end of the week, but the weather pattern doesn't look totally settled, which means limited sunshine, and the risk of an occasional shower. temperatures will remain on the mild side... but still not as warm as we'd like for the end of february...

we have cloudy skies this morning just after sunrise... but no rain at the moment. we've already had close to 2cm since this latest storm system started moving in, and there should be plenty more where that came from. the break in the action we're experiencing early this morning won't last very long, i'm inclined to think, as it looks like, from the satellite vantage point, the next batch of rain is organizing just to our west.

the best frame of mind for all of us is to expect occasional periods of rain for the next 36-48 hours. "occasional" means that there will be some dry weather in between, but it would be a good idea to keep the umbrella and rain gear within reach if you need to be out and about.

still no indication that there will be enough cold air available to bring the snow line anywhere close to mcleod, or even naddi and dharamkot for that matter. this is definitely a more "springtime" storm system, with lots of mild air wrapped up in it. we are watching for some clearing toward the end of the week, but no dramatic turn to an extended period of dry and sunny weather is expected...

the day is ending rather pleasantly, with a bit of sun peeking through the clouds on the western horizon. clouds have dominated the day, however... and occasional light rain from the mid-morning into the early afternoon totaled 0.14" (4mm). the thermometer barely budged all day... but did finally reach 54.1F (12.3C) when the clouds broke a little during the late afternoon.

we're currently catching a break in the action, but another wave of rain will be heading our way later tonight and/or tomorrow... and it will most likely be heavier than what we had today. then, there will be another wave or two of rain after that through the first day of losar and perhaps even lasting into thursday. the upper-level storm system responsible for the wet weather is still scheduled to begin pushing into western kashmir on wednesday, then weaken and die out right over our heads. this spells an extended period of rain-dodging and gray skies. a couple of the computer models are still spitting out data which indicates 4-5cm (1.5-2") of rain is not out of the question by thursday.

there is no dramatic insurgence of colder air expected, so that snow line which was way up near triund today should stay up above the vast majority of the population...

it is mostly cloudy at sunrise this morning, and i'm recording a mild overnight low temp of 49.6F (9.8C). rainfall since last evening has been just 0.02" (less than 1mm) here in the upper part of town.

very nice to have some milder air in place... but it won't really mean much due to the fact that we've been losing our sunshine little by little the last couple of days. the storm system moving in from central asia will have gradually greater influence on our weather between now and wednesday... increasing our chances of rain. we're in for an extended period of damp weather, with even a period or two of heavy rain not out of the question during this coming week. a couple of the computer models are showing around 5cm (2") of rain in our vicinity, mainly between late today and wednesday evening... so we shall see if that becomes reality or not.

as we've been talking about a lot recently... the warmer air in all but the highest levels of the atmosphere will keep the snow line well above us... but very heavy snow is going to be likely this week above 2500m (8200ft). here at our elevation, temperatures will be in the range of normal for a late february wet spell...

we've had our first light rain shower in mcleod ganj early this evening... a sign of things to come. otherwise, we had a partly sunny morning and a mostly cloudy afternoon, with a high temp of 57.0F (13.9C) which occurred during the sunshine just before noon.

the storm system we're waiting for continues to develop and progress at a snail's pace. the center of the upper-level energy is just now entering northern afghanistan, and will be moving ever so slowly eastward during the next 3-4 days. rain chances will be gradually on the rise during the coming 24-48 hours, peaking on tuesday night into early wednesday. at this point, it looks like we may be looking at 4-5cm (1.5-2") of rain in a few spots by the time the first day of losar comes to an end. i still think the airmass will be warm enough to keep the snow line well above where most of us live. but as always... stay tuned as the situation evolves.

our temperatures have been steadily rising the last few days... but due to the thicker clouds and prevalence of rain, we probably won't warm up much more. however, overnight lows will remain quite comfortable, all things considered.

the shiver-factor has reduced significantly the last couple of mornings... i'm recording a low temp of 47.8F (8.8C) here on tushita road just below the mountaineering center. it's a beautiful morning, with scattered high clouds just prior to sunrise.

we're spending our weekend in a state of limbo, as we wait for the sprawling, very slow-moving storm system to our west to begin stirring up some rain showers. so far, it has only been providing us with some high cloudiness, as well as pulling up some milder air ahead of it. computer models are all showing that this system may never acually move through northern india... instead, the center will move into western kashmir by mid-week, then just die away. although we could have some stray showers pop up later today, the focus continues to be on late monday through wednesday for the best chance of some moderate to heavy rainfall.

with a warmer airmass in place, it is going to be hard to get any snow below about 2300m (7500ft) or so, but as usual, we'll keep a close eye on it, especially during the tues/wed period. temperatures are not warm, by any means, but at least it is now quite a bit more comfortable than it's been in a long while...

there is a high overcast sky this evening... much like this time yesterday. but thanks to morning sunshine and some warmer air nudging in from the south, we made it to a high temp of 55.8F (13.2C). not beach weather, by any stretch, but it's at least considerably milder than it was earlier this week. there has been no rainfall in the area that i am aware of.

satellite pics continue to show large patches of mainly high clouds being manufactured and ejected into nothern india... in advance of a developing strong storm system. as we've been talking about the last couple of days, rain chances have been pushed back, as we wait for this potent upper-level system to move our way. there could be some stray showers popping up around the area tomorrow, but it still looks like the best chances of significant rainfall will hold off until monday... and especially tuesday and wednesday. a couple of the computer models are trying to keep most of the heavier rain just to our north in kashmir.... so we'll just have to watch it.

very mild air is being drawn northward ahead of this system, so we'll continue to erase the really chilly overnight low temps from the forecast for the next several days. unfortunately, with limited sunshine, we won't be able to capitalize much on the warmer airmass during the daytime.

a very different comfort level this morning, at least at my house... the overnight low dropped to just 46.2F (7.9C). there are some high clouds in the area, but it does look like the sun will be visible as it peeks over the mountains very shortly.

our weekend is definitely starting off on the right foot, with these milder temperatures and sunshine. the next storm system remains well to the west of us, but as it shoots out little waves of energy in advance, we'll see periods of cloudiness at times, along with a small chance of a passing shower or two. it doesn't look like there will be much of significance to dampen outdoor weekend plans. in fact, temperatures will probably be close to the warmest of the year so far.

the real show starts monday, and especially by tuesday into wednesday, as the center of this slow-moving storm system finally pushes into northern india. rain chances will increase dramatically... but the airmass is going to be so mild that the snow line should remain well above mcleod, naddi and dharamkot. more info on that as it becomes available in the next few days...

we have quite a lot of high cloudiness obscuring the sunset this evening, after sunshine this morning into the early afternoon boosted our high temp to 53.6F (12.0C). that's the warmest of the past week.

it would have been nice to hold on to those blue skies for a few more hours this afternoon, but already, the next weather system is spewing out waves of high clouds well in advance of its arrival. this system is not well-organized just yet, and it looks like it will take a few days before the best chances of rain materialize across himachal pradesh. although there could be a few scattered light showers over the weekend, the potential for heavier rain will hold off until the monday through wednesday timeframe.

temperatures from the surface into the mid-levels of the atmosphere are going to warm steadily during the next 48-72 hours... so when the precipitation finally gets going, the snow line should be well up the mountain. the best news for the coming few days is that temperatures are going to be milder than they've been in a while... it will be especially notable during the overnight hours.

yesterday turned out quite nice, but it looks like today will be even better. we are "in between" weather systems for just this short 48 hour period, allowing us to soak up some sunshine, dry out and warm up a bit. there will be some high, thin cirrus clouds streaming in from the west today which may dim the sun from time to time, but it will still be pretty bright and pleasant.

although showers are back in the forecast for the weekend, it looks right now that they will be few and far between, as the main energy associated with this approaching system is going to hold off until the first and middle parts of next week. be prepared for a rain shower or two on both saturday and sunday... but no long-lasting, heavy rainfall is expected. it will likely be a different story by monday or tuesday, though.

temperatures will be on a steady warming trend right through the next 4-5 days. in fact, it should remain fairly mild even at night... which means we might get to cut back on the heating energy!

we have a pleasant evening in progress... with partly cloudy skies and milder temps than we've seen all week. i recorded a high temp of 52.3F (11.3C), thanks to the fact that the sunshine definitely won the battle with the clouds today.

our latest wiggle aloft could do no more than muster some scattered clouds today... mainly over the mountains. tomorrow looks even better, with a good amount of sunshine and slightly milder temperatures expected. enjoy it while it lasts, because starting on saturday, we'll come under the influence of the next upper-level storm system to our west, which looks like it will move in slowly, but then be even slower to depart. computer models are forecasting wet weather for the majority of next week.

the good news is that warmer air is bubbling up from the south, and should cause temperatures to rise in all levels of the atmosphere during the next several days. at this point, it looks like the snow line should remain well above mcleod, naddi and dharamkot as the next batch of moisture moves in...

skies are partly cloudy before sunrise this morning. i've recorded a low temp of 41.2F (5.1C), and there has been no precipitation overnight.

our weather pattern remains unsettled, with wave after wave of weak upper-level disturbances drifting through the western himalayan region. we have another one of those in the area today, but i don't think it will do much more than prevent the sun from totally banishing the clouds, along with giving us at least a mentionable chance of a passing rain shower at some point. tomorrow (friday) still looks like the nicest day of the week, in advance of yet another weak storm system which is poised to affect us over the weekend into early next week with an increasing chance of occasional rain showers once again.

temperatures will remain on the "cool" side of normal today... but milder air is going to be gradually nosing its way in as we approach the weekend. despite the clouds and rain potential, i think it will feel a lot more comfortable than it has for the past several days...

we have a mix of clouds and hazy sunshine at sunset this evening, at the end of a day that has featured a combination of sunshine, clouds and fog. in fact, it almost looked like a mid-monsoon afternoon, with the thick fog between about 1:00 and 3:00pm. there has been no measurable rainfall today... and the high temp reached 50.2F (10.1C) during the period of nice sunshine late this morning.

despite the lingering clouds and fog, today turned out nicer than anticipated... with at least a couple of hours of welcome sunshine, and a lack of rain for the first time since saturday. there have been some scattered showers in himachal this afternoon and evening, but so far, they've avoided us. those showers are a product of an upper-air pattern that remains unsettled... and which will remain a bit disturbed for the next several days at least. for that reason, it's hard to completely remove the chance of a rain shower or two from the forecast... except for perhaps on friday, which i still think might be the best day of the whole week.

the computer models are flip-flopping on the intensity of a couple of approaching upper-level disturbances over the weekend into early next week. it does look likely that temperatures will be milder, but we'll have to keep an eye on rainfall potential...

we have clouds and some hazy/foggy stuff around the area early this morning. additional rain showers last evening delivered another 0.23" (6mm) here on the upper side of mcleod ganj, and i recorded an overnight low temp of 41.5F (5.3C).

although there is no major, organized storm system in the area, we have nothing remotely resembling a fair weather pattern either. relatively weak upper-level disturbances will continue to track across the area for the next several days... keeping us in line for occasional rain showers, and not much more than some fleeting glimpses of sunshine. i'd say friday could be the best candidate for a semi-decent day before the next system nudges into the area for the weekend.

temperatures will stay quite cool through thursday, but then it looks like we'll get a gradual moderating trend started as the weekend approaches, keeping any precipitation in liquid form on both saturday and sunday...

it's cloudy and murky and gloomy just before sunset this evening. despite the rumbles of thunder around 4pm, rainfall today has been very light and spotty. i've only measured 0.05" (1mm) since early this morning, but that does bring the total rainfall since early sunday up to 1.29" (3.3cm). the thermometer moved very little today, with a high temp of just 46.0F (7.8C).

an active jetstream continues to flow across the western himalayan region and northern india, which will bring us a series of weak upper-level disturbances over the course of the next several days. there is just no evidence of a bonafide clearing trend, with a significant amount of cloudiness, along with some scattered showers remaining in the forecast. although precipitation will be generally light, it's still going to be a bit damp around the edges. keep in mind that random pools of colder air aloft could covert rain showers to snow showers one of these days, just to remind us that it is still winter.

that potential weekend storm system we've been talking about doesn't look very dramatic at this point... but will at least keep us away from a string of dry and sunny days anytime soon...

very windy early this morning... with mostly cloudy skies and a few sprinkles of rain. i've only measured an additional 0.01" (less than 1mm) since last evening's report. temperatures have been nearly steady since yesterday late afternoon... currently it is a relatively mild 44.4F (6.9C) here on tushita road just below the mountaineering center.

although the main storm system that swept through here late sunday and monday has moved east, the upper-atmospheric flow is full of disturbances, which will keep our weather rather active. more off and on rain shower action is likely today, with gusty winds at times, and plenty of cloudiness. as far as i can tell, the temperatures aloft have warmed a bit more, so at this point, i don't think we have to be concerned about snow... but things can change in an instant so i'm sure we'll all be keeping a close eye on that snow line!

no major, lasting clearing trends are expected as we head into the latter part of the week. there will still be the potential for an occasional shower, with temperatures remaining below normal for this time of year. also watching another more organized storm system for the weekend, but it isn't looking all that impressive just yet.

a rather quiet evening in progress after a very active previous 24 hours. i had another 0.63" (1.6cm) in the rain gauge since about 6:30am, bringing the total rainfall since very early sunday morning to 1.23" (3.1cm). with some small breaks in the clouds this afternoon, the high temp reached 44.6F (7.0C).

there were just a few snowflakes in mcleod ganj this morning into the early afternoon, with very minor snow accumulations reported in dharamkot and naddi. as expected, the significant snowfall has remained in the mountains above... at least up to this point. our upper-level storm system is now centered over western kashmir, and will continue moving gradually eastward during the next 24 hours. computer models are in a state of disarray over solutions from this point forward. one model is ending the precipitation altogether, while another is insisting on the development of another round of significant rain and snow between now and tuesday night. yet another offers something in between, which seems to be the way to go for now. i think occasional rain and/or snow showers are still a good bet tonight and tuesday... with a painfully slow clearing trend thereafter.

the weather pattern will remain unsettled for the rest of the week, so don't expect a dramatic turn to sunny days and warm temps anytime soon. in fact, we could be dealing with yet another potent storm system by the weekend...

we have light to moderate rain in the upper part of mcleod ganj before sunrise this morning. i'm measuring 0.50" (1.3cm) since about 5 o'clock last evening... with a total of 0.60" (1.5cm) since late saturday night. the low temp at my place has been 38.3F (3.5C)... keeping the precipitation in liquid form so far.

the snow line is obviously somewhere just above mcleod ganj, thanks to some relatively mild air in the middle layers of the atmosphere. as this upper-level storm passes by over the course of the next 24-36 hours, we'll have to watch the potential for some colder air to get pulled into the mix... which could very easily change the rain to snow here at our elevation. in any event, we're in line for more wet weather today and perhaps a good bit of tuesday as well.

it does look like we'll be gradually drying out during the middle of the week... with temperatures expected to rebound, at least temporarily. unfortunately, computer models are already forecasting yet another significant storm system to impact the area over the coming weekend...

precipitation has been fairly light thus far today... but we've had both rain and snow showers around the area. i recorded a high temp of 47.3F (8.5C) early this afternoon as a little sunshine tried to peek through the cloud cover.

the coming 36 hours are going to be very interesting, as a strong upper-level storm system swings through northern india. as we've already witnessed today, the rain/snow line is not far above mcleod ganj, and depending on the battle between differing air masses here along the front ranges of the mountains, we could see either a lot of rain, a significant dumping of snow, or something in between. my gut says that the best snow potential remains above mcleod, but i wouldn't be surprised if i'm wrong! stay tuned.

the best rain/snow chances will occur from tonight through late monday night... with things expected to gradually dry out by the middle of the week. temperatures will struggle with all the clouds and wetness around, but there is a hint of a significant warm-up by friday.

i first heard some light rain at around 3:40am... and have 0.10" (3mm) in the rain gauge up here at the top of mcleod ganj on tushita road at the time of this posting. the overnight low temp has been 40.5F (4.7C), and the humidity this morning stands at 62%.

those early morning showers are the first of many more to come in the next two or three days. in fact, it is looking more and more likely that we'll see moderate to heavy amounts of rain as this new storm system moves through northern india, with a period of snowfall not out of the question. right now i'm leaning toward the greatest snow potential remaining above us... but that could change quickly if some of the colder air aloft finds its way a bit further down the mountain. as we all know... the rain/snow line is next to impossible to predict with any great degree of accuracy! we get to watch and wait.

at any rate, late today through early tuesday morning should be the target timeframe for picking up the heaviest precipitation. yes... another extended period of cold and wet weather looks to be inevitable...

it was a bright and sunny morning, but high clouds have been thickening up as the day progresses, and just before sunset, we have a mostly cloudy sky. the high temp this afternoon was a relatively mild 54.1F (12.3C).

for those of you who've been here throughout... it goes without saying that it's been a rough winter. the final two-thirds of february have a reputation for being one of the most variable and changeable times of the year. some years, we get an early taste of springtime, with lots of sunshine and temperatures rebounding into the low 70sF (21-24C). other years have featured lots of overcast with periods of rain, sleet and snow... all the way until the end of the month. at this point, it's looking like this year may turn out closer to the latter scenario.

currently, we have a brand new upper-level storm system organizing just to our west, which will be slowly pushing through northern india during the coming 72 hours or so. there could be a shower or two developing late tonight, but the best chances of rain will be on sunday and monday... with some rain and/or snow showers lingering into tuesday and wednesday. as always, it will be tricky to nail down the snow line, but based on temps in the middle layers of the atmosphere, i think most of the snow will stay above mcleod ganj, and possibly above naddi and dharamkot as well. check back here for the latest developments...

it is very normal for the month of january to alternate between wet, cold, stormy weather and periods of nice, mild sunshine. fortunately, the past several days have been on the drier side, which has been a nice respite from the major amounts of both rain and snow which fell in the area earlier in the month.

there are a few minor disturbances scheduled to drift through northern india during these final several days of january, which could easily generate a few rain and/or snow showers. however, significant, long-lasting winter storms are not expected at this time.

our temperatures will remain pleasant in the direct mid-day sunshine, but quite chilly under the clouds, and during the evening, overnight and early morning hours.

our weather pattern is still a bit messy... but most of the precipitation during the last several days has been in the form of rain in the immediate mcleod area. in fact, there were several inches of rain during the early part of the week... along with some hail, sleet and a period or two of wet snow in a few spots.

suffice it to say that miserable winter weather is firmly entrenched... which is actually very normal for mid-january.

the good news is that there isn't any indication of another significant, long-lasting storm system threatening himachal pradesh for the next several days... at least. temperatures will be rather pleasant during periods of mid-day sunshine, but will still be very chilly under cloud cover and during the overnight hours.

from all accounts, there has been significant improvement in conditions around the area during the past couple of days... some sunshine, melting snow, and open roadways. it appears that last weekend's snowstorm was the biggest since january, 2005 in mcleod ganj, dharamkot and naddi... and the biggest in decades further down in the lower elevations of the kangra district. THANK YOU to those of you who have been providing up-to-date information on our facebook page as the situation unfolded. i am bummed out that i missed the snow, but not so upset that i missed the power cuts and infrastructural meltdowns that are a part of life when winter storms hit mcleod ganj!

well, believe it or not, there is yet another storm system heading our way... which may bring some significant rain and snow to the area on sunday and monday. it is very difficult to determine where the rain/snow line will be, but based on what happened last weekend, it appears there's a good bet that snow will fall as low as 1500m (4800ft), if not lower. please be prepared for inclement weather conditions to develop once again by the latter half of the coming weekend...

a major snow event has been occurring during the past 18 hours or so, with knee-deep snow reported at upper TCV, and at least a few inches reported all the way down into dharamsala and other parts of the kangra valley.

the upper-level system responsible for the snowfall is now winding down and shifting east of himachal pradesh, but lingering moisture and a few minor disturbances will keep the chance of a few rain and snow showers in the forecast for the next couple of days.

temperatures have fallen to around 0C (32F), and will likely dip at least a couple of degrees further, especially overnight. this is just about as cold and snowy as it gets around here, folks! fortunately (or unfortunately), mcleod ganj is practically a ghost town now, due to the massive gathering in bodh gaya.

be especially on guard if you plan to be venturing above 2500m (8000ft), due to the decent chance of some accumulating snow.

as we approach the end of 2011, our weather pattern remains uneventful. but of course... this is pretty much par for the course for this time of year. although there continue to be some ripples in the upper-atmospheric flow gliding across the western himalayan region, the air is almost bone-dry from the surface into the highest levels, preventing the development of any significant rain or snowfall.

historically and climatologically speaking, things usually begin to change during the last week of december, however. although there is nothing tangible to confirm that trend this year (yet), we are transitioning into the season when storm systems become more probable, and rain and snow chances increase.

keep an eye here and i'll attempt to give a "head's up", should our first significant winter storm system appear on the western horizon...

the very normal mid-december weather that has been dominating recently may get shaken up during the next few days. there is a rather vigorous, dynamic upper-level storm system that will be swinging eastward through the himalayas of northern india, bringing at least a mentionable chance of some rain and snow showers to the area, especially on monday and tuesday.

as is typical for this time of year, moisture is severely limited, so nothing more than light precipitation amounts are expected. in fact, most of it should be confined to the higher mountains above the mcleod area. keep an eye out and be prepared if you plan to be hiking and trekking during the first part of the week.!

it looks like temperatures will cool off another notch by mid-week, as this system passes by.

the overall weather pattern will remain very stable and consistent over the course of the coming several days. although it's not out of the question that a bit of upper-level instability could drift through and stir up a period of cloudiness and perhaps a mountain rain and/or snow shower, there is no indication that any significant storm system is waiting in the wings.

although it shouldn't be much to get too concerned about, there will be an upper-level disturbance moving through during the next 2-3 days. a couple of the computer models are showing a moderate chance of some scattered rain shower activity over parts of jammu/kashmir and himachal pradesh... and this time of year... the precipitation will most likely be in the form of snow in some areas above 2100m (6900m).

after a long period of dry and quiet weather, it's a good idea to be back in the mode of being prepared for inclement weather if you're going to be venturing into the higher elevations.

the final few days of november are behaving pretty much as they should. in fact, the weather pattern for the past couple of weeks has been typical for late autumn... which is nearly always the most quiet period of the entire year.

looking ahead... moisture will remain very limited, and the atmosphere will remain quite stable as we round out the month and enter december. the later sunrises and earlier sunsets continue to allow temperatures to cool down ever-so-slowly... but there is still no indication of a significant blast of much colder, wintry air in the near future.

a massive ridge of high pressure in the upper atmosphere is dominating the weather pattern across almost all of india recently. but that means different things for different parts of the country. here at the higher elevations along the mountain slopes, it means plenty of sunshine, along with above normal temperatures. at lower elevations... especially down on the plains, it spells INVERSION... which means slightly cooler air is trapped below warmer air in the mid- and upper-levels, aiding in the development of fog during the overnight and early morning hours.

some high clouds will be streaming in from the west from time to time during the next few days, otherwise we'll continue to see a good amount of sunshine, with temperatures running quite a bit warmer than normal for the end of november.

there are no storm systems on the horizon at all, and our airmass is very stable... so precipitation chances will remain virtually nil for at least the next several days...

yet another nearly perfect november evening in progress. we have clear skies at sunset, with temps falling from a high of 63.5F (17.5C), which occurred around 1:30pm.

today could most likely go in the TOP TEN LIST of sunniest days of 2011. there was only meager development of a few scruffy cumulus clouds over the mountains this afternoon, otherwise, we had nearly wall-to-wall sunshine. a weak upper-level disturbance will be passing by well to our north during the coming 24 hours or so, but it will go virtually unnoticed around here. after it passes, a ridge of high pressure in the mid- and upper-levels will build across northern india, and that should keep us firmly enveloped in a fair weather pattern all the way into the middle of next week.

temperatures are already starting to slowly moderate, and it looks like we'll be enjoying some slightly warmer than average temps, in addition to all the sunshine, during the next several days... at least.

we continue to move deeper and deeper into "uneventful" territory, which is actually very normal for this time of year. the weather pattern is totally devoid of storms and/or signficant disturbances, and should remain that way for the next several days at least. afternoon cloudiness has been diminishing day by day this week, and as some warmer air starts to move in aloft, that should keep us in line for mostly sunny skies.

our weather pattern remains pretty much the same -- dead calm. even the flow in the upper atmosphere has calmed down in the past 24 hours or so, as a high pressure ridge in the mid- and upper-levels begins to build. things are looking quiet and stable as we approach the weekend, with lots of sunshine expected, along with the usual afternoon clouds, mainly over the mountains. but... there are indications that even that daily phenomenon my be overtaken by sunshine just a little more, day by day.

skies are mostly clear just after sunset this evening. the afternoon clouds cleared out much more quickly today than during the past couple of days, which may be a sign of improvement for the rest of the week. i recorded a high temp of 61.7F (16.5C) with no rainfall, and humidity averaging around 60%.

we remain in a holding pattern... fairly strong west-northwest flow aloft, with a rather cool and moist airmass in place here along the front ranges of the himalayas. apart from a couple of random, isolated rain and snow showers in the higher reaches of the mountains, no precipitation is expected for the next several days. the greater percentage of sunshine we saw today may be due to more stability between temperatures in differing layers of our airmass... but the potential for clouds vs. sunshine will have to be weighed on a day-by-day basis. still... sunshine will remain most prevalent during the morning hours.

by friday, it looks like warmer air will begin to manifest gradually in all levels of the atmosphere... so we may end up back above normal, temperature-wise, by the weekend. in our immediate future, tonight could be the coolest night of the season...

these dreary clouds are hanging in thick and tough right at sunset this evening. the sunshine was in control until about noon, but then fought hard to show itself during most of the PM hours. according to my records, today's high temp of 59.9F (15.5C) was the coldest since the 11th of march! we definitely took a significant step toward the winter season today.

large scale weather features are virtually unchanged, and will remain stagnant until the very end of the week. however, small, micro-scale factors are in control of our weather pattern here on the southwest-facing slopes of the dhauladars. just like we experienced back during the first week of october, trapped moisture along the front ranges of the mountains, along with variable temperatures in different levels of the atmosphere are causing this gloomy cloudiness during the PM hours. satellite pics show all kinds of glorious sunshine across most of the rest of northern india. just our particular challenge to deal with. for now, get up early if you want to enjoy the sunshine, and we'll see if some of these micro-scale factors change in our favor.

this rather cool airmass will hang in through thursday... but then there are indications of a bit of a warm-up as we head into the weekend.

we are in the midst of the coolest weather of the autumn season... and it appears that temperatures will likely drop another couple of degrees, both highs and lows, by the middle of the week. this is the kind of weather that is definitely chilly if you're not able to be in the direct sunshine.

the general weather pattern is quiet, but a fast moving flow of air aloft, from the west and northwest, will continue to bring a few minor ripples through the area. for us, that simply means having to contend with periods of cloudiness, especially during the afternoon hours... but higher up in the mountains, it could mean at least a slight chance of a couple of rain and snow showers. always be prepared for anything if you are venturing up above 3000m (11,000ft).

we have hazy and partly cloudy skies during the half hour before sunset this evening. it has been a relatively cool day... with a high temp of just 62.2F (16.8C), which occurred just after 3:00pm. although there was some sunshine, the clouds had the upper hand today, with humidity averaging around 65%.

there is a rip-roaring jetstream blasting across the western himalayas right now in the highest levels of the atmosphere. that, combined with cold air aloft and just enough moisture along the front ranges of the mountains has prevented us from enjoying the full sunshine we would like to see. despite the occasionally gloomy skies, there are no real storm systems threatening... and that should remain the case right through the coming week. today there were a couple of isolated showers in the higher mountains, and that kind of activity can't be entirely ruled out during the next few days. there is even a risk of one of those showers making it down to our elevation, perhaps on tuesday.

the chill is definitely back in the air... and these seasonably cool temps should stick around until the very end of the week, when we could experience a a bit of a rebound.

a couple of clouds are hovering over the mountains early this morning, otherwise we have a mostly clear sky... humidity is high, at 72%. the overnight low here on tushita road just below the mountaineering center has been 54.5F (12.5C).

as i mentioned on last evening's post, our weather pattern will be fairly uneventful during the next several days, but not as calm, clear and quiet as it was during the first half of last week... when we had a couple of days with nearly 100% sunshine. the mid- and upper-level flow is rather brisk from the west, and there will be a handful of minor ripples and cold pockets aloft which will likely prevent us from seeing full sunshine. still... rain chances will be very slight, although a brief afternoon/early evening shower can't be totally ruled out... especially uphill from mcleod.

after last week's extremely mild temperatures, we are already dipping back closer to normal for november, but there are indications we could start to warm up again by the end of this week.

a beautiful, sunny morning underway... the current humidity reading is 58%, and the overnight low has been a relatively mild 56.3F (13.5C). i measured 0.02" (less than 1mm) of rainfall in the past 24 hours. some new snow has fallen up on the dhauladars, but i haven't heard anything specific about amounts yet.

things are looking good for the next few days, as our generally mild and dry november continues on. the upper-level disturbance which moved through on thursday and friday kept us in and out of the clouds (more in), and brought a paltry round or two of light showers, but that system has now dissipated. it is being replaced by a flat west-to-east flow at the jetstream level which looks benign at this point.

we should see lots of sunshine into early next week... but will still have to watch for the afternoon build-up of clouds over the mountains, and perhaps a shower up there, especially today. temperatures remain above normal, but should be cooling slightly over the course of the next three or four days. we have yet to taste any truly colder, winter-like temps this season... but i hear no complaints.

there are still some light showers lingering around town just after sunset this evening, otherwise skies are partly cloudy. there were a few sprinkles and brief showers around the area around 10:30am, then our latest round which began just after 4:00pm. in my rain gauge, it has been barely measurable... perhaps a couple of hundredths of an inch at best. today's high temp hit 70.7F (21.5C) just after 1:00pm... according to my records, that's the warmest temp since october 20th, and will likely end up being our maximum temperature for the month of november.

just a peek toward the mountains today indicates there has been a lot more precipitation up there than we've had further downhill. there were at least two rounds of moderate rain and snow showers, so the snow that had melted on the passes during the last several days has been replaced. the upper-level disturbance responsible for the rain and snow is moving out this evening, replaced by what looks to be a quiet, west-to-east flow of air aloft during the coming several days. rain chances should all but disappear again as we get into the weekend.

our unseasonably warm temps are also on their way out... there is no major blast of cold air behind this system, but we should at least return closer to seasonal averages day by day into the middle of next week.

it's cloudy at sunrise this morning, with the humidity at 44%. my overnight low was 61.2F (16.2C), which is outrageously warm for the second week of november. i'm not aware of any rainfall in the immediate mcleod ganj area overnight, but satellite pics seem to indicate there is a mix of rain and snow happening up at the higher elevations.

our disturbance in the upper atmosphere will be moving through today, causing temperatures aloft to cool significantly. since very mild air remains in the lowest levels, instability will be on the increase. a period of rain and/or thundershowers is not a sure thing, but keep in mind the potential to get hit by something anytime today, into early tonight. one computer model is pegging 2.0cm/0.80" of rain for us... that could be way overblown, but at least alerts us to the possibility of a decent round of showers. of course there will be new snow on the dhauladar passes and peaks, so don't be caught clueless up there.

a fairly quick turn to sunnier, brighter and gradually cooler weather is expected starting over the weekend... lasting well into next week.

we have a mostly cloudy sky at sunset this evening, with the humidity holding near 50%. despite the clouds which thickened up steadily throughout the day, we reached a very mild high temp of 66.7F (19.3C) just after 11am. there has been no rainfall, so far.

upper-level energy is now moving into northern india, along with a pocket of much colder air aloft. that will steadily destabilize the atmosphere during the coming 24 hours, which could lead to a period or two of rain or thundershowers. two of the four main computer models are indicating at least some light precipitation totals across our area by tomorrow night, while the other two models keep rain/snow confined to the higher elevations. don't be surprised if we get a couple of showers and maybe some thunder here in mcleod... but be especially prepared if you will be up above triund.

it looks like we'll quickly revert to generally sunny autumn weather after this system clears out of here over the weekend, as temperatures drop several degrees by early next week...

we have glimmers of sunshine through a broken layer of high clouds this morning, with a humidity reading of 47%. i recorded an overnight low of 59.0F (15.0C)... the warmest since the 21st of october. it really doesn't get much milder than this to start a morning during the month of november.

satellite pics are showing a huge area of broken mid- and high clouds extending from the arabian sea through pakistan, into northwest india. all of this is in advance of the upper-level disturbance that will be plowing southeastward during the next 36 hours or so. although low-level moisture is very limited up here in himachal, there will probably be enough dynamic energy with this system to stir up some scattered showers and thundershowers later today, tonight and friday. rainfall amounts are still expected to be generally light here in mcleod, but stay tuned for updates should things start developing!

there will likely be accumulating snow again up on the dhualadars between this afternoon and friday evening, along with a sharp turn to colder temps. don't be caught unprepared up there.

we have a broken high overcast sky this evening at sunset. despite the limited sunshine, i recorded the warmest high temp since the 26th of october (diwali) @ 65.7F (18.7C). our humidity reading hovered in the 50-55% range for most of the day.

the big ridge of high pressure which provided us with tons of sunshine during the first part of the week is in the process of dissolving, as a batch of upper-level energy continues to approach from the west. temperatures in all layers of the atmosphere are quite a bit above normal for this time of year. that very warm air aloft combined with some tropical moisture being pulled northward ahead of the approaching disturbance is what brought us the high level cirrus clouds today.

things may get a little more interesting and active during the coming 48 hours or so, as this disturbance moves across northern india. computer models are in a state of disagreement, but there is a general consensus that scattered showers and perhaps some thundershowers will develop on thursday into friday across kashmir and parts of himachal pradesh. rainfall amounts should be on the light side (less than 1cm/0.40") if we get any at all, but any sort of measureable rain during november is a notable event. of course rain showers at our elevation this time of year equals snow up on the dhauladar passes... so be ready for that, trekkers and climbers.

temps will remain above normal for another day or maybe two... until cooler air flows back in over the weekend. but still, nothing particularly cold for this time of year is on the horizon.

the milder air has finally arrived. my overnight low has been 56.8F (13.8C)... the warmest i've recorded since oct 22nd... nearly three weeks ago. skies are partly cloudy just before sunrise this morning, with a humidity reading of 48%.

the nearly cloudless skies of the past couple of days are now a thing of the past, it appears. the big high pressure ridge which has been in charge of the weather pattern recently is now beginning to break down, as strong westerly jet stream winds are crashing into it, carrying the first in a series of upper-level disturbances into north india during the coming 12-24 hours. that means we will see more clouds, initially of the high and mid-level variety, and increasing chances of some showers and possible thundershowers, especially on thursday and friday. it's been a great few days to be in the mountains, but if you are venturing up above 3000m/11,000ft or so, heading into the latter part of the week, be prepared for a sudden turn to nasty conditions.

temperatures on the back side of our retreating high pressure ridge will be quite a bit above normal through friday... but we should drop back closer to the realm of climatological averages over the weekend.

today definitely has been a contender for the "sunniest day of 2011" prize. there were just a few high cirrus clouds drifting through, and only a handful of short-lived cumulus clouds over the mountains during the mid-afternoon hours. downright gorgeous. mysteriously, i recorded a high temp of 63.1F (17.3C) for the third straight day, so we haven't yet gotten down to business with regard to the advertised warming trend. still... if you've been able to spend any time in the sunshine, it has been toasty warm.

already our atmosphere is readjusting... as a more active pattern organizes to our west. we may get one more day of quiet weather before rain chances will be on the increase. a general trough of low pressure will slide into the western himalayan region by the end of the week, and that will flatten out the high pressure ridge which has been responsible for the almost unlimited sunshine of the past few days. new data coming in is suggesting that we may stand a better chance of some measurable rainfall starting on thursday, with that chance continuing into the early part of next week.

i'm still (maybe stubbornly) holding onto the expectation of a moderate warming trend during the next couple of days... already, temps are a bit above normal for this time of year, nonetheless.

other than a few wisps of very high cirrus clouds, skies are clear this evening just after sunset. today turned out to be the sunniest day of the post-monsoon season... and according to my records, it was way back in april that we had a day with so few clouds. there were only a handful of anaemic-looking cumulus clouds over the mountain peaks for a couple of hours early this afternoon, and a few very thin strips of cirrus. i recorded a high temp of 63.1F (17.3C)... as humidity ranged generally between 50-55%.

the dramatic warming in the upper atmosphere today squashed the usual afternoon development of clouds over the mountains... thanks to the ridge of high pressure which continues to develop across north india. there isn't much evidence of warming here at our elevation yet, but i still expect us to jump up a few degrees during the coming 2-3 days. that will put us well above normal for november.

the fair and mild pattern won't last for long, it appears. already, there is indication of a couple of new upper-level disturbances arriving between late thursday and sunday, and that will give us at least a slight chance of getting some random showers, while eventually cooling our temps back down to seasonal averages. in the meantime... enjoy this gorgeous stuff while it lasts...

we have clear skies just before sunrise this morning. my current temp (and overnight low) here at the top of mcleod ganj is 53.2F (11.8C), with a humidity reading of 62%.

today is going to be interesting, from a weathergeek perspective. a huge ridge of high pressure is building across the area throughout all layers of the atmosphere... that implies sinking, drying and warming of the airmass. however, if the mid-levels warm more quickly than the surface, we could end up with an inversion, which could cause a layer of clouds to develop by the afternoon. i'm very anxious to see how that plays out.

for now, i'm going for a generally sunny scenario, along with a healthy warming trend as we head through the next few days... we could see temps well above normal for november by the middle of the week. rain chances are virtually nil until friday, when we could get clipped by an upper-level disturbance that will be breaking down our high pressure ridge.

our atmosphere is in another state of transition, as a massive area of high pressure develops across nothern india, from the surface into the highest levels. computer models are forecasting a rather robust warming trend this week, along with plenty of sun until at least wednesday. my concern which dampens my enthusiasm about a nice warm-up centers on the fear that the warmer air from the plains riding up the mountains may simply produce a layer of mid- and low level clouds... we've seen that time and time again, during just about any season of the year. for now, i'll go with the sunshine and warming trend, but it'll have to be carefully watched for potential spoilage.!

it looks like we are heading into a stretch of weather that will be absolutely beautiful... and eventually, quite a bit warmer than normal for november. a big, sprawling area of high pressure from the surface into the upper atmosphere is developing, and should dominate all of nothern india for most of the coming week. we are likely to see almost unlimited sunshine, low humidity, with the chance of any rain: virtually zero. that doesn't happen too often here along the front slopes of the dhauladars. even up at the highest elevations, it should be about as dry and (relatively) warm as it ever gets during this time of year.

of course, on the edge of the himalayas, there is always the potential for surprises (both good and bad), and things can change in a heartbeat... so check back here as we see if this sunny and unusually warm scenario actually plays out in reality!

we have a partly cloudy sky just after sunset this evening, after a period of mid-afternoon thundershowers delivered 0.04" (1mm) of rain at the upper part of town. there were even a few minutes of very small hail at my place. the high temp reached 64.9F (18.3C) shortly after noon... while humidity fluctuated wildly, from 47-65%.

the expected scenario has played out nicely today... although it would have been a bonus to pick up more rainfall during this very dry season of the year. we'll still have a chance of another round or two of showers during the coming 24 hours or so as this latest upper-level disturbance moves through, but it is unlikely that we'll get anything very significant. there could still be some accumulating snows higher up the mountain by saturday evening... so take care and be prepared if you're heading up to any of the passes.

it's another in a seemingly endless streak of beautiful mornings. we have clear skies at sunrise, with the humidity at 57%. the current temp (and overnight low) is 54.5F (12.5C).

the weekend is nearly upon us... and so is an upper-level disturbance. this weak system will be moving through the area between now and saturday evening, and may touch off some widely scattered shower and thundershower activity. any rainfall is expected to be on the light side, but just keep in mind the potential for a round of showers if you plan to be out and about. there could be some minor snowfall accumulations above 3000m (11,000ft) during the next 36 hours or so. otherwise, there will still be periods of sunshine, both today and tomorrow, in the midst of some clouds and that chance of rain.

things will quickly clear out again on sunday, with sunshine, low humidity and a rather dramatic warming trend expected for the first part of the new week. computer models are forecasting temperatures to be well above normal for this time of the year...

very close to perfection this evening... other than a few clouds clinging to the mountains, the sky is mostly clear just after sunset. the high temp today was a rather mild 65.5F (18.6C), while humidity averaged in the 50-55% range for most of the day.

there was a healthy build-up of big cumulus clouds over the mountains during the early to mid- afternoon hours, and satellite pics indicate that there were likely a few rain and snow showers at the higher elevations... perhaps some thunder as well. down here where we live, the sunshine held on... and it turned out to be a very nice day.

we're still watching an approaching upper-level disturbance which, weak though it is, will increase our chance of some widely scattered shower action during the coming 48 hours or so. i think there is a fairly good chance that we could get a period of showers, perhaps with some thunder, here in mcleod either friday or saturday... so keep that in mind and factor it into your outdoor plans. otherwise, the vast majority of our hours will remain quiet.

by sunday, this system will clear out, and that will take away our rain chances... and usher in a period of warmer-than-average temperatures for the first part of the coming week.

we have full sunshine early this morning with a humidity reading of 54%... which is a bit lower than it has been recently. i've recorded an overnight low temp of 54.3F (12.4C), along with a trace of rainfall during the past 24 hours.

a couple of weak upper-level disturbances are set to trek across the area during the coming 72 hours, but it looks like the full effects will remain well to our north. be aware and prepared for the chance of a shower or two between this afternoon and saturday evening, but i don't expect anything long-lasting or particularly significant at this point. rainfall, all told, should be less than a quarter of an inch (6mm). but at least it's something to keep an eye on, and this time of year, we'll take any rain we can get!

by sunday, rain chances should all but disappear again... with dry and sunny weather expected for the beginning of next week, along with a bit of a warm-up. in fact, there are indications that temperature could jump well above normal for a few days next week.

a beautiful sunset has just concluded... as skies have rapidly cleared out this evening. there were a few sprinkles and very light showers around town this afternoon, in the midst of the hide-and-seek sunshine, but at least at my place in the upper part of town, there wasn't enough rainfall to measure. humidity has been in the 60-65% range for much of the day, and i recorded a high temp of 64.6F (18.1C).

it was a bit ironic that we actually had less afternoon cloudiness today than there's been recently, but ended up with those few raindrops. some random sprinkles or light showers will remain in the forecast through saturday, as a couple of weak upper-level disturbances pass by. rainfall amounts should be well below 1/4" (6mm) in total, but some higher amounts are possible further up in the mountains, especially on friday into saturday. be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions up there... although i don't expect the kind of snowfall that occurred up on the passes just 10 days ago.

precipitation chances should disappear again, with a bit of a warm-up expected as we move into the early part of next week...

another glorious morning in progress... with unlimited sunshine to start the day. humidity is still rather high, at 65%, and i've recorded an overnight low of 52.9F (11.6C).

if you have windows facing the east, you're probably rather pleased with the weather recently, since the vast majority of warm sunshine has been during the morning hours. those with only western exposure are getting ripped off... for the time being. this pattern of sunshine in the morning and generally cloudy conditions in the afternoon is expected to continue right into the weekend... along with a gradually increasing chance of a stray rain shower or two. right now, i'd say friday and saturday look to be the best opportunities for catching one, but they should be rather brief and light, nonetheless.

temperatures continue to incrementally cool... especially at night... but it looks like we may have a bit of a rebound in temps, along with a turn to more consistently sunny skies early next week. that's a long way off, but something to watch.

we have hazy and partly cloudy skies once again this evening at sunset. humidity has remained high for this time of year... around 65% all day. i recorded a high temp of 63.5F (17.5C) which occurred around 1:00pm.

the last several days have seen very little variation on our recent theme of sunny mornings and partly to mostly cloudy afternoons. the pattern in all levels of the atmosphere remains unchanged... with a westerly flow aloft carrying a few minor ripples across the area. so far, there has been nothing strong enough to capitalize on this moderate low-level moisture sitting here along the dhauladars... so showers have been almost non-existent, except at some of the higher elevations where there could have been some very light precipitation during the PM hours. having said that, a couple of the computer models are calling for a reduction in humidity levels in the next day or two... so we'll see if that pans out.

don't be too shocked if we do eventually get some sprinkles or light showers at some point this week, otherwise, it looks like status quo... with the most pleasant and nice autumn weather in line during the morning hours. temps will be generally steady through week.

the sun is shining through hazy skies early this morning, with the humidity at 67%. i recorded an overnight low temp of 54.0F (12.2C).

november has arrived in our hemisphere, but so far, it is looking no different from the month just ended. we remain in a very quiet and rather uneventful weather pattern, with no major changes anticipated during the coming several days at least.

as i've been mentioning, the only thing happening is the occasional passage of a weak disturbance in the upper atmosphere. that will keep us from enjoying totally cloud-free skies, and also give us at least a slight chance of a random sprinkle or light shower during the afternoons. our mornings should remain very very nice, however.

temperatures have steadied out the last couple of days, and there are indications it may actually warm up a couple of degrees on a few afternoons this week, depending on the amount of sunshine that can hang on.

there are still a few clouds lingering this evening, otherwise we have a hazy sky just after sunset. humidity today was again on the high side, between 60-70% for most of the day, while the high temp reached 64.4F (18.0C) during the early afternoon.

the last four days or so have been quite similar... with pretty much unlimited sunshine until around 11:00am, followed by varying degrees of cloudiness during the mid-day into the early evening hours. so far, there has been no rainfall in the area, but we could still squeeze out a random few sprinkles or light showers during the afternoon sometime this week. the flow aloft is west-to-east, so occasional weak embedded disturbances and a moderate amount of low-level moisture will continue to prevent us from enjoying totally sunny, cloud-free skies.

right now, our available computer model guidance doesn't show any dramatic turn of events in our near future... so november should kick off very similarly to the way october is ending. we are right in the midst of the driest time of the year in the dharamsala area, so this quiet weather is right on track...

the sky is totally clear at sunrise... as it has been during the vast majority of mornings during the past several weeks. i've recorded an overnight low of 53.2F (11.8C), which is actually the coolest of the month at my location. humidity is rather high this morning, at 71%.

the higher humidity here at the surface, combined with a few very weak disturbances aloft is what has fed into the cloud development over the mountains during the afternoons recently. i see no reason why today should be an exception, so the morning sunshine will likely yield to clouds again by noon or shortly thereafter. rain chances remain extremely slim, but still don't be surprised if there are a few sprinkles or a brief light shower one or two afternoons during the coming week.

the general weather pattern will remain the same as we say hello to november... a rather strong west-to-east flow aloft, with no surface features to speak of. our gradual turn to cooler temps, which is of course normal this time of year, will continue on...

the sunset was barely visible just a few minutes ago, due to hazy, partly cloudy skies. our beautiful morning sunshine was rapidly replaced by cloudiness just after 1pm, which remained for the majority of the afternoon hours. i recorded a cool high temp of just 62.8F (17.1C), while the humidity averaged around 65% for much of the day.

satellite pics this afternoon confirmed that cloud development was confined to the south-facing slopes of the himalayan front ranges, with the heaviest build-up along the dhauladars, as usual. there may have also been some rain and snow showers at the highest elevations.

as threatening as the sky looked this afternoon, we're not really in a pattern that would favor good chances of rain here at our elevation. there will be some disorganized disturbances floating through the area during the next several days, which will keep periods of clouds alternating with mainly morning sunshine, but the way it looks now, stormy weather and significant rainfall is not expected. still... don't be surprised if we get a period of light showers at some point this week, and always be prepared if you're heading higher into the mountains.

other than a few wisps of high, thin cirrus clouds and a bit of haze, we have clear skies at sunset this evening. the humidity was a bit higher today than it has been all week... averaging near 55%. i recorded a high temp of 64.0F (17.8C), which was actually a bit cooler than expected.

we had full sunshine until about 11am, then clouds began to develop over the mountains, and i was a bit surprised by the partial overcast between about 1 and 2pm. but by mid-afternoon, the clouds dissipated once again... just as quickly as they developed. upper air charts indicate one of those minor "wiggles" in the upper air pattern, which could have been responsible for the period of cloudiness.

it's still hard to pinpoint any significant changes on the way during the next couple of days at least. we'll continue to enjoy sunshine during the vast majority of the daylight hours, with temperatures remaining very close to normal for this time of year.

a disorganized system is being advertised by computer models for the first part of next week, but at this point, chances of significant rainfall appear to be slim. as always, be prepared if you are venturing into the mountains, regardless...

barring any surprises, we should remain locked in this gorgeous autumn weather pattern for a few more days... with a quiet and stable atmosphere in place from the surface all the way into the upper atmosphere. clouds, even over the mountains, have been rather scarce the past couple of days, and i'm still wondering if we might get a day of 100% wall-to-wall sunshine in the near future.

despite all the sun, temperatures have actually cooled down another notch, but should hold fairly steady as we go through the weekend. still watching the potential for a more active weather pattern to begin developing early next week, but it's too early yet to say whether we'll get any decent chance of rain out of the deal. stay tuned...

today was arguably the sunniest day in several months... with only a very feeble collection of clouds gathering over the mountains for a while between noon and about 4:00pm. despite the huge percentage of sunshine, it was a rather cool day, with the high temp only reaching 65.5F (18.6C).

general high pressure from the surface into the mid-levels of the atmosphere, a westerly flow aloft, and the absence of any significant moisture is giving us a very quiet and stable weather situation, which should continue into the weekend. even the highest mountains have been pretty much free of rain/snow showers the last couple of days... providing some beautiful conditions for trekkers and climbers.

temperatures have been cooling gradually... as the himalayan airmass adapts to the longer nights, and seeps downslope. it's still warm in the sun, but we've reached the stage where the chill is pretty much here to stay in the shade, and during the overnight hours.

there may be some changes coming early next week, so stay tuned as we watch for a returning chance of some rain shower action...

aaahhhh... the sound of silence, on this morning after diwali celebrations. the sky is 100% clear, as we await the sunrise, with a humidity reading of 44%. my overnight low (and current temp) is 55.2F (12.9C).

our weather pattern is about as quiet, dull, and inactive as it ever gets in this part of the world. despite a rather strong westerly flow aloft, the atmosphere is stable and moisture is very limited. this combination is going to keep us in the sunshine for a few more days, with very little chance of even a stray shower... except perhaps far up the mountains. by late sunday, computer models are hinting at a bit of instability developing, which will gradually increase our shower chances as we head into the new week.

a totally clear sky is allowing great views of both the sunset and the mountains this evening. sunshine has been the dominant feature all day, with humidity between 40-50%. i recorded a rather cool high temp of just 66.7F (19.3C).

on average, temperatures have cooled down about 4F/2C from where they were a week ago, as the daylight hours shorten, and mountain air spills down the slopes. actually, we're now squarely in the range of "normal" for the last week of october.

DIWALI fireworks are in no danger of being spoiled this evening, thanks to fair skies and nearly calm winds. this generally clear and quiet weather pattern is expected to continue right into the weekend... and it still looks like we stand a chance of getting a 100% cloud-free day, which is a rarity here at the foot of the dhauladars.

the next weather system to watch will be approaching by late sunday, increasing clouds a bit, and bringing in a little better chance of a shower.

a calm, quiet and 100% clear morning... humidity stands at 41%, and i've recorded an overnight low of 55.4F (13.0C) here on tushita road just below the mountaineering center.

HAPPY DIWALI... looks like it will be a nice one. we are entering what is normally the driest and most quiet time of the year, weatherwise, here in the dharamsala area. moisture in all levels of the atmosphere is low, and winds in the mid-levels and aloft are generally from the west and northwest. while there are always a few wiggles and jiggles in the jetstream flow that could set off an isolated mountain shower, there are no major disturbances in sight, and that should allow fair weather to dominate for several days.

sun lovers should be satisfied, and so should those who are not looking forward to the eventual advance of colder air... as temps should be steady in this rather mild range right into the weekend at least.

we have mostly clear skies at sunset this evening. it's been a dry day, with a high temp of 67.3F (19.6F), and humidity remaining very close to 40%.

the term "partly cloudy" was invented for days such as this... there has been plenty of sunshine to go around, but quite a few patches of clouds difting through as well. there were even one or two isolated showers up towards lahaul and spiti during the maximum heating period of the early to mid-afternoon hours. there has been a weak upper-level disturbance drifting through during the past 12 hours or so, and that's the only thing that kept us from wall-to-wall sunshine.

the most consistently dry and calm airmass in many months is settling in now, thanks to a moderate northwesterly flow throughout the middle and upper atmosphere. this pattern will present us with lots of sunshine, low humidity, and seasonably cool to mild temperatures through the end of the week. classic october... toasty in the direct mid-day sun, but chilly at night. layers required!

sunshine and a few patchy clouds this morning... with a humidity reading of just 36%. i recorded an overnight low temp of 55.9F (13.3C).

there is one more minor circulation and little pocket of energy in the upper atmosphere which will drift across northern india today. it should go virtually unnoticed... but may be able to trigger one or two isolated showers over the mountains this afternoon.

otherwise... a fair and quiet weather pattern will prevail through the week, and into the weekend even. that means plenty of sun by day, and stars by night, along with pleasant autumn temperatures and low humidity. according to my records, 24 april was the last day of 100% sunshine, without even any PM cumulus clouds over the mountains... maybe we have a shot at such a day later this week...?

a picture perfect evening in progress, after a beautiful day. other than a moderate build-up of clouds over the dhauladars from late morning to late afternoon, we had sunny skies. the high temp reached exactly 68F (20C), while humidity hovered between 40-50% for most of the day.

in the wake of our weekend storm system, things have been nice and calm and quiet today. according to the satellite perspective, there were only one or two isolated showers (most likely snow) over some of the higher himalayan peaks this afternoon, otherwise it appears that another phase of drier weather has settled in for a while. trekkers may be interested in checking out the comments section of this morning's post (below) for some up-to-date information from a regular weathergeek reader concerning conditions on the passes.

sunshine will dominate for the remainder of the week... but please continue to be aware that spotty shower development could occur in the mountains, despite the fair weather pattern. temperatures have now settled to near normal, especially during the nights and early mornings, but the sun will keep things quite pleasant during the daytime.

there is no trace of clouds at sunrise this morning, with a humidity reading of 47%. my overnight low temp has been 54.1F (12.3C)... and in case you missed it on the last couple of posts, yesterday's rainfall amounted to 0.61" (1.5cm).

our weekend winter-like storm is pretty much out of the picture now... but there may still be enough energy aloft and instability in the atmosphere to stir up a thundershower or two around the area this afternoon. the mountains of himachal pradesh and jammu & kashmir were hit with the first significant snowfall of the season over the past 48-72 hours. if you're going to be trekking or traveling anywhere to the north, please check ahead to find out if passes are navigable... last night i read that rotang was at least temporarily closed, and i'm sure there are other inaccessible passes at the moment.

after today, the rest of the week is looking very nice. we should see lots of sunshine, low humidity and near normal late october temperatures. it has obviously cooled off several degrees, making for some chilly nights and early mornings, but with the sunshine, daylight hours will remain rather comfortable.

the stars are out tonight, after a very interesting and active day. the upper-level disturbance which has been threatening northern india for the past few days finally unloaded on us starting late this morning, with a respectable amount of rain (the most we've received this month), along with some intense thunder and lightning during the very early part of the afternoon. i experienced a direct lightning strike at my place, which was a first, and a bit unsettling to say the least.

the mountains have been picking up some light snowfall since thursday, but today, there were some heavy snowfall totals over much of the higher elevations of kashmir and the nothern half of himachal pradesh. apparently rotang pass is closed (for the moment), and there are reports of up to a foot of snow on many passes to our north. obviously, colder, wintry air has made an appearance, for the first time this season.

a dramatic turn to nicer weather is in our immediate future, however, as drier air flows in behind this vigorous weather system. expect an increasing amount of sunshine day by day as we progress through the coming week... good news for those in town for the teachings, for trekking, or for diwali celebrations...

1:51pm... total rainfall is now 0.60" (1.5cm). my temperature is currently 54.7F (12.6C). there was a direct lightning hit at my house just after noon, which totally melted/shrivelled my umbrella, which had been just outside my door on the terrace. never seen anything like that before...

11:20am... i have 0.45" (1.1cm) of rainfall at the top of mcleod ganj on tushita road. it rained pretty much continuously from 10:00am onwards, with a period of moderate to heavy rain around 11:00am that delivered the bulk of the amount.

this is the first measurable rainfall (according to my records) in just over three weeks. it was needed, but the timing was bad, considering the teachings going on this morning.

the temperature dipped to 54F (12.2C) during the heavier rain, but has now rebounded a bit.

it will be interesting to see how much snow is up on the mountains when the sky clears.!

we have mostly cloudy skies this morning, after a round of very gusty winds, very light showers, and a rumble or two of thunder between roughly 3:00 and 4:00am. once again, the rainfall wasn't enough to measure, at least here in upper mcleod ganj just below the mountaineering center. i recorded an overnight low temp of 59F (15C).

the center of our upper-level disturbance is still well to the northwest, over northern pakistan, and there is a large area of thick cloud cover and embedded thundershowers associated with it. computer model guidance (and satellite trends) continue to keep the bulk of the stormy weather across kashmir and extreme northern himachal, as this system sweeps through during the coming 24 hours.

periods of rain and snow are likely in the mountains... today is not going to be a very good day for trekkers, climbers and campers above triund and up to the dhauladar passes. down here in mcleod, i still think we could get a shot at a period of showers and/or thunderstorms, but i'll be surprised if the rainfall is very significant. will try to post updates if things turn nasty!

it is partly to mostly cloudy across the area at sunset. although there was some thunder during the mid-afternoon, and a fresh dusting of snow up on the mountain peaks, i'm not aware of any raindrops in the immediate mcleod ganj area. i recorded a high temp of 68.9F (20.5C) during the late morning, before the clouds thickened up.

the first real "winter-like" storm of the season is moving through the western himalayas this evening. satellite pics indicate widespread thundershowers, which likely contain both rain and snow, depending on elevation, across northern pakistan into kashmir and mainly northern himachal pradesh. this storm system will slowly work its way through northern india during the coming 24-36 hours, but it still appears that the most signficant rain and snowfall is going to remain just to our north.

here in mcleod, i think our best window of opportunity for a round of thundershowers would be from late tonight through sunday evening. snow has fallen on the dhauladars the past couple of afternoons, and i think there will be yet another round or two (at least) of accumulating snowfall on the passes and peaks. if you have plans to venture above triund on sunday, be prepared!

by monday, we'll start another trend toward dry and sunny weather.... humidity will drop even lower than it has been during this past week.

it's another perfectly clear morning. the humidity stands at a comfortable 47%, and we've had an overnight low temp of 56.8F (13.8C), which is the coolest i've recorded this month. there has been a trace of rainfall in the past 24 hours, thanks to the brief thundershower late yesterday afternoon.

satellite pics this morning show clusters of cloudiness hovering to our north and west, in association with an upper-level disturbance over northern pakistan. most of the energy associated with this system will remain to our north, which means the best chance of significant rain and snowfall will be across kashmir and perhaps a few of the mountain ranges and valleys of extreme northern himachal pradesh. this system has been developing fairly consistently this week, so our suspicions that we will be left out of the majority of the precipitation are being confirmed, so far.

still, be aware that a period or two of showers, or perhaps and thunderstorm, could occur in our neighborhood over the weekend, and be prepared for sudden changes... especially during the afternoon and evening hours. the dhauladars could pick up a decent coating of snow by late sunday! temperatures have cooled off a bit during the past 12-18 hours... and i think we can expect generally cooler weather to last for the next few days.

the southwestern sky is mainly clear at sunset this evening, but there are lots of clouds over the mountains to the north and east. we had a brief thundershower, at least in the upper part of town, between 4:30 and 5:00pm, but it didn't produce enough rain to overcome the pollen, dust and cobwebs in my rain gauge. i recorded a high temp of 69.8F (21.0C) this afternoon.

according to my records, this afternoon's raindrops were the first in 12 days, and we're now going on 20 days since there has been enough rain to measure. there was also a fresh dusting of snow on the peaks just above town this afternoon. the weather pattern is changing, and will be more active than it's been in a few weeks as we progress through the weekend. right now, it appears that the most significant rain and snow will remain to our north, over kashmir, and perhaps extreme northern parts of himachal, but scattered rain and snow showers, along with some thunder and small hail, are likely in the mountains through sunday.

it still looks like we'll escape the best chances for significant rainfall here in mcleod ganj, but a couple of periods of thundershowers are still a good bet during the coming 48 hours or so. if we do catch a decent bout of rain, temperatures are going to cool off considerably...

we have clear skies at the break of dawn this morning. the humidity is a low low 39%, and our overnight low temp has been 59F (15C).

i've now logged 19 days in a row without measurable rainfall... and as i dug through records since the start of 2011, i see that we've had no other such streak of dry weather this entire year. the closest i can find is 11 days without measurable rain back at the end of april. so... things have definitely dramatically changed this month, and now we find ourselves in a position where some rainfall would actually be happily welcomed.

the overall weather pattern will be quite complex during the next several days, with a very active upper-air pattern bringing in a few disturbances. obviously, moisture is extremely limited, so it remains doubtful that we'll get much in the way of significant rainfall here in mcleod ganj... stay tuned for updates/changes on that. however, it still appears that between now and sunday, there could be at least a couple of rounds of rain and snow showers, with thunder and hail as well, higher up in the mountains. as i've been mentioning repeatedly, be prepared for anything if you'll be trekking, camping or crossing passes this weekend!

although we didn't catch any of the action, showers and thunderstorms were scattered this afternoon across much of the western himalayan region... you may have noticed the huge billowing cumulonimbus clouds above the mountains to our north and east. this development was in response to the first in a series of upper-level disturbances that will continue to move across northern india between now and sunday. occasional rain and snow showers with thunder and hail are likely in the higher elevations over the weekend... but our chances of precipitation here in the immediate mcleod ganj area are not as good.

still, be aware that we could get hit with a period of showers and/or thunderstorms once or twice over the course of the next three days. and if you plan to be higher up in the mountains, absolutely be prepared for sudden storms with rain, snow and hail, along with a rapid turn to colder temperatures. temps here in mcleod and vicinity will be cooling off as well, as we progress through the weekend...

we have a few clouds around the area this morning just before sunrise, with a humidity reading of 44%. the overnight low has been 59.0F (15.0C) here at the top of mcleod ganj.

a rather complex weather pattern is developing just to our west and north, and will bring varying degrees of changes to the western himalayan region during the next few days. jetstream winds are increasing, and will bring in a series of upper-level disturbances between now and early next week. temperatures in all levels of the atmosphere will be cooling... especially above 3500m (11,500ft), and clouds will be on the increase.

it remains to be seen whether we'll be able to get any significant rainfall here in the immediate area... my gut instinct at this point is NO. but that may not be the case in the higher elevations of himachal pradesh and kashmir, where there could be some periods of moderate rain and snow showers. this weekend will be a bit precarious in the mountains, so be prepared if you plan to be trekking, crossing higher passes, and camping out!

just another picture perfect sunset in progress here in himalayan paradise. sunshine was easy to come by once again today, with humidity generally in the 40-50% range. i recorded a high temp of 71.8F (22.1C)... a solid 2C/4F above normal for this time of year.

starting tomorrow, our weather pattern, at least in the upper atmosphere, is going to begin shifting again. cooler air will flow in aloft, with some cooler air expected here at our elevation as well, as we move toward the weekend. the computer models are showing some scattered light precipitation breaking out by late thursday or friday, but we'll have to see whether that actually materializes. a nice rainfall would be very nice indeed, after nearly three weeks with hardly a drop. be prepared for a good chance of snow showers in the mountains above about 3200m (11,000ft).

some of the sunshine we've been relishing for the past several days will be sacrificed with the arrival of this disturbance... and it appears things may remain rather unsettled into the first part of next week.

we remain in the midst of a string of very beautiful days... featuring lots of sunshine, lower humidity, and pleasantly mild temperatures. but already, just less than a month after the monsoon rains fizzled out, there is plenty of talk around town about water problems beginning to develop. other than a couple of showers at the very beginning of october, the month has been almost totally dry.

there is a changing weather pattern expected as we approach the weeked, however, and that may bring us at least some scattered shower action. don't expect much out of it though... i'd be surprised if we can get anything more than about a 1/4" - 1/3" (6-8mm). more likely, this system will allow temperatures to drop another notch, and get us closer to normal for this time of year.
